Our Future Cities • Half of humanity now lives in cities, which will be 60% by 2030 – 90% of future growth will take place in cities • Rapidly growing Indian cities will be home to nearly 40% of Indians by 2021 (UN Habitat 2008). • Greenpeace report predicts climate change impacts will force major population movements from coastal cities to inland already over burdened cities (125 million people by 2050).

Present Scenario • Implementation of Central and State Schemes for solid waste, sewage treatment, rainwater harvesting and environmental planning • 74th Amendment and its implications • Reforms based development agenda • Specific and uniqueness of city is not a considered factor in design and implementation of programme

  5. Why Universalisation of "Roshni”? • Sustainable Cities are Fundamental to Social and Economic Development • Environmental Degradation Obstructs to Development Contribution of Cities • Environmental Deterioration is not Inevitable

  6. Integration of Planning for Cities Environment Improvement • Development of Frame work of Urban Environmental agenda • Environmental strategies and Decision Making • Empowering of Urban Local Bodies through Capacity Building • Efficient use of Resource for Effective Changes

Intervention Area • Projects and Schemes should be planned in coordination specially with implementation agency as third tier governance • Developing Packages of mutually supportive interventions for all concerned departments • Institutionalizing Broad Based Participatory Approaches to Decision Making

  8. Intervention Area • Municipal corporations/bodies collaboration are keys to success of initiatives • Proactive changes of laws/bye laws of third tier governance • Funding Mechanism has to established • Development of in-house capacity for implementation of projects

Road Ahead • Need based training for Administrative and Elected wings of ULBs • Empowering Urban Local Bodies for effective outcome • Environmental Planning Should be basic criterion for selection of immediate developmental projects • Knowledge sharing with ULBs will result in symbiotic relationship of new paradigm for avenues of sustainable development
