  1. Double Object pronounsUsing pronouns In this lesson you will learn to utilize double object pronouns effectively in Spanish in speaking and in writing.

Direct Object Pronouns • Direct object pronouns are used to replace the direct object of a sentence. • Direct objects receive the “direct” action of the verb. • Example: I buy a book. • What do I buy? A book. • (It receives the action of being bought) • Book is the direct object of the sentence.

  4. Un ejemplo: • Yo compré un teléfono inteligente ayer. • To find the D.O. of the sentence we ask: • What receives the action of the verb? • What did I buy? A smart phone • D.O. = teléfono inteligente *When replacing the D.O. of a sentence with the pronounPRONOUN IS PLACED BEFORE THE VERB! “Yo lo compré ayer” (I bought it yesterday)

  5. ¡Practicamos! Identify the D.O. in the sentence and re-write it with the correct D.O. pronoun. 1.Ellasescucharon la música jazz anoche. 2. Nosotroscocinamos los mariscospara la cena la semanapasada. 3.Felipe limpió el parabrisas del sedán.

Indirect Object Pronouns • Indirect object pronouns are used to replace the indirect object of a sentence. • The Indirect object is the person or thing to whom or for whom the action is performed. • Example: I write a letter to my friend. • To whom do I write the letter? My friend. • My friend is the indirect object.

Un ejemplo: • Yo compré un suéter para mi esposo. • To find the I.O. of the sentence we ask: • To whom or for whom is the action performed? • For whom did I buy the sweater? • I.O. = Mi esposo *When replacing the I.O. of a sentence with the pronounPRONOUN IS PLACED BEFORE THE VERB! “Yo le compré un suéter ayer” (I bought him a sweateryesterday)

  10. ¡Practicamos! Identify the I.O. in the sentence and re-write it with the correct I.O. pronoun. 1. La policía dio un boleto al conductor loco. 2. Nosotros regalamos unas flores a Maria y Ana. 3. Mamá compró un convertible nuevo para nosotros.

  12. Double Object pronouns • There may be some instances in which you are required to use 2 object pronouns in one sentence. • Example: • Paco dio un anillo a su novia. • D.O. What did he give? “un anillo” • I.O. To whom? “su novia”.

  13. Double Object Pronouns • ¡Cuidado!(careful) • When using 2 pronouns in a sentence the Indirect always precedes the direct. (Indirect first!) • When using the Indirect object pronouns “le” or “les” with the direct object pronouns “lo”, “la”, “los”, or “las”, CHANGE “le” or “les” TO SE! • Ejemplo: • Pacodioun anillo a sunovia. • Pacoselodio. (Paco gave it to her).

  14. ¡Practicamos! Identify both the direct and indirect object pronouns and re-write the sentences replacing with the appropriate pronouns. 1. Mi hermano mandó una carta a abuelita. 2. La profesora dio el examen a nosotros ayer. 3. Ellas mostraron las fotos a los niños.
