  5. World Trade Organization (WTO) • Established on 1 January 1995 • Successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) • Based in Geneva, Switzerland • Membership: 146 (as of April 4, 2003) • China joined the WTO on December 11, 2001

World Trade Organization (Con’t) • Functions: • Administering and implementing the multilateral trade agreements which together make up the WTO; • Acting as a forum for multilateral trade negotiations; • Seeking to resolve trade disputes; • Overseeing national trade policies; • Providing Technical assistance and training for developing countries; and • Cooperating with other international institutions involved in global economic policy making

  7. Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) • Between China and Hong Kong SAR • Signed on June 29, 2003 • Signed by Chinese Vice Minister An Min and Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary Antony Leung • First free trade pact since joining the WTO
