  1. Open case files to page 7 Objective 09/24/12 SW Continue to work to solve the murder mystery, applying life science skills to the crime scene. Jumpstart Can you name all of the organs of the digestive system? (hint: there are 7 total!) • Make a sketch and observations • Of Clue #3: Stab Wound Page 8 Page 12 Page 8

  2. The Liver Case file page: 07

  3. Liver What does the liver do? Makes protein, detoxification, produces chemicals.

  4. Liver Features Three main lobes Connected to the digestive system Second largest organ of the body

  5. Liver Healthy vs. unhealthy Importance to the case: The liver can help CSI investigators determine if a victim was poisoned. Any poison ingested will end up in the liver, causing it to weigh slightly more than normal.

  6. Exploring Clues #2 & 3 (pg. 7-12) • Name the following major organs that make up the human digestive tract and describe their function. Passageway for food (mouth to stomach) Chews food; produces saliva to begin digesting food Secretes enzymes and acids that digest food 1 Produces digestive juices that go into the intestines BONUS Produces digestive juices that digest food in the intestines 2 3 BONUS 4 Stores the liver’s digestive juices 6 Completes the digestion of food 5 Absorbs nutrients from the food and sends it to the body 7 Stores waste until expelled For more info, check out: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/yrdd/

  7. Blood Case File: Page 11

  8. Blood Blood A specialized body fluid designed to carry oxygen.

  9. Blood Made of: • Red blood cells • They transport the O2 • White blood cells • They fight infections • Platelets • They clot your blood when you get a cut

  10. Blood Facts about blood Blood is NOT blue… ever. The average male has 5.2 liters of blood Female: 3.3 L Some animals that drink blood are used to heal major wounds!

  11. Blood Importance to the case: When a victim has been stabbed, blood oozes from the wound CSI investigators can collect this blood and measure its volume, determining when the victim was stabbed!

  12. How much blood has been found? 12 Hours Prior: • At 7:30 pm When Police Arrived: • At 7:30 am • We can determine the time the stabbing occurred based on the amount of blood drained from the body 6 Hours Prior: • At 1:30 am

  13. How YOU can help: • Measure the amount of blood that has been collected from the crime scene Procedures: • Pour both test tubes into a graduated cylinder • Measure the volume of the blood • Record your findings on pg. 12 of your Case File • Determine the approximate time of stabbing

  14. Objective 09/25/12 SW Use temperature skils and metric to determine the time of Miss Betty’s death. Jumpstart Clue # 5: Unknown Hair Sample (magnified 50x) into page 16 of your case file. Clue # 4: Box of Markers Page 14 Page 16

  15. Temperature Case File Page 14

  16. Temperature • What is Temperature? • What do we use to measure Temperature? • A thermometer! • The measure of much energy the molecules of a substance has • *Fun Fact: It is perceived by the body as how “hot” or how “cold” something is!

  17. Temperature • How is temperature measured in the English system? • How is temperature measured in the Metric system? • Degrees Fahrenheit (°F) • DegreesCelsius (°C)

  18. Temperature In Metric: CELSIUS In Standard: Fahrenheit Water freezes at: 32° Water boils at: 212° Human body temp: 98.6° Avg. Outside temp: 77° • Water freezes at: 0° • Water boils at: 100° • Human body temp: 37° • Avg. Outside temp: 25°

  19. Temperature Coldest ever recorded Temperature: • -89 Celsius (-129 F) in Russian Vostok Station in Antarctica July 21, 1983 Hottest ever recorded Temperature: • 58 Celsius (136 F) in Al 'Aziziyah, 1922

  20. Temperature • Importance to the case: • The human body maintains an average temperature of 37°C. • A person’s temperature will change over time after death, and the overall change can provide CSI investigators a time frame for when the person died.

  21. Temperature • Normal Body Temperature = 37° C • What we know: • Normal Body Temperature is37° C • Body temperature remains constant foraround 1 hour after death • Every hour after that, a person’s body temperature drops 1.5° C 45° C 42° C 39° C 36° C 33° C 30° C 27° C 24° C 21° C 18° C 15° C 12° C 9° C 6° C 3° C 0° C

  22. Temperature • What we know: • Police measured Miss Betty’s body temperature at 7:30 am • Miss Betty’s Body Temperature = 19° C • Miss Betty’s Temperature = 19° C 45° C 42° C 39° C 36° C 33° C 30° C 27° C 24° C 21° C 18° C 15° C 12 11 12° C 1 9° C 10 2 6° C 3° C 9 3 0° C 4 8 ACC: What formula can we use to represent this data? 7 5 6

  23. Temperature • What we can calculate: 45° C 42° C 12 39° C 11 1 36° C 10 2 33° C ? 30° C 9 3 28 7 27° C 24° C 4 8 26.5 37 1 8 21° C 18° C 7 5 2 35.5 9 25 6 15° C 12° C 10 23.5 3 34 9° C 6° C 32.5 4 11 21 3° C 5 31 12 20.5 0° C 6 29.5 13 19 What time would be 13 hours before 7:30 am?

  24. Temperature • What this tells us: • Miss Betty had been deceased for 13 hours prior to Police arriving • Miss Betty actually died at 6:30 pm • This time is BEFORE the time she was stabbed, meaning she was poisoned, THEN stabbed! (Remember, she was stabbed between 7-8 pm!) 45° C 42° C 39° C 36° C 33° C 30° C 12 27° C 11 1 24° C 10 21° C 2 18° C 9 3 15° C 12° C 4 9° C 8 6° C 7 5 3° C 6 0° C 6:30 pm!

  25. Temperature • What can we infer? • Miss Betty was poisoned, THEN stabbed! • What could the poison be???

  26. Hair Samples Case File Page 16

  27. Hair Samples • Beneath a microscope, every hair and fiber has its own unique pattern. • Dog Hair (from SCIENCEPHOTOLIBRARY) • Alpaca Hair & Merino Wool

  28. Hair Samples • Draw a sketch of Ms. Johnson’s hair sample under “Suspect 1” on pg. 15 in your Case File.

  29. Hair Samples • Draw a sketch of Ms. D’Onofrio’s hair sample under “Suspect 2” on pg. 15 in your Case File.

  30. Hair Samples • Draw a sketch of Mr. Schindler’s hair sample under “Suspect 3” on pg. 15 in your Case File.

  31. Hair Samples • Mr. Bagford refused to provide a sample of his hair, so unfortunately, we have no comparison for this suspect. ?

  32. Hair Samples Compare the samples taken from the suspects and compare them to those taken from the crime scene. • Which sample seems to match the hairs taken from the crime scene? Sample from crime scene

  33. Hair Samples • D’Onofrio • The best match for the hair sample would appear to be from Ms. D’Onofrio. • What can we infer from this observation? • Sample from Crime Scene

  34. Crime Scene Inferences

  35. Final Clue Clue # 6: Broken Ruler
