  1. SUSTAINABILITY IN THE BORTOLOMIOL WINERY Student: Marco Buso Research of the last year of study V ITIS – 2010/11

  2. The Company Bortolomiol winery is located in Valdobbiadene and produces wines and sparkling wines (Prosecco DOCG). The company produces their own grapes, but also it buys grapes from other producers (always from Valdobbiadene), transforming them into a finished product.

  3. Areas The winery is divided into these areas: - Sparkling (green) - Product storage (red) - Filling and packaging (blue) - Offices - Winery - Vineyards

  4. Consumption data In 2010 we took over energy consumption in every area of the Company.

  5. Analyse of energy needs We set an electronic spreadsheet to analyze the following energy needs: Heating needs (offices, product storage, filling and packaging) Cooling needs (winery and sparkling) Electricity (offices, winery and sparkling) Transport T1103_Fabbisogni.xls T1103_Calcolo IPE Uffici.xls

  6. Distribution of energy consumption Thanks to the energy analysis, we can draw the following graph, where we can see how the energy needs are divided between the Company areas. 640˙000 kWh

  7. Distribution of energy consumption It is also possible to draw this second graph, which shows the percentage of the various types of energy. 640˙000 kWh

  8. Energy balance Bortolomiol winery began a process of conversion of its structure for having a rational consumption of energy, for saving energy and for using renewable sources. A first step was done a few years ago with the signing of a contract with a provider of electricity generated exclusively from renewable sources. Electricity is the main form of energy used by the company, so this choice was very important in terms of sustainability. GO TO DATA SHEET

  9. Environmental balance When the carbon dioxide, produced (directly or indirectly) in the various activities of the company, is the same of the carbon dioxide absorbed by the company itself, the impact on environment is balanced. Usually the environmental balance is the following:

  10. CO2 emissions and absorptions in vineyard It is interesting to show the environmental balance in the vineyard, where we calculated the emissions and removals of CO2:

  11. CO2 emissions and absorptions of the Company In the same way we calculated the emissions and the absorptions of carbon dioxide in the other processes: GO TO DATA SHEET

  12. CO2 emissions and absorptions of the Company

  13. Conclusions The storage of the product is the activity with the higher energy consumption. The analyze of data shows that there is a waste of energy: the heating produced by the condensers of the chiller is not used in any way. This amount of energy can be easly used inside the winery. We also notice that the company has a good environmental balance, but it is not the same the energy one. That’s why the company decided to install a PV system (that is working now with a production of about 50˙000 kWh per year).
