  2. Young People and the Internet The Internet is such an integral part of young people’s lives these days. It opens up so many educational and social opportunities giving them access to, quite literally, a world of information and resources. Whether on a computer at school, a laptop at home, a games console or mobile phone, young people are increasingly accessing the internet whenever or wherever they can. (CEOP)

  4. What Are The Risks? Young people feel safe Do not apply the ‘stranger danger’ concept Don’t guard their information Unaware of legalities Trust their friends ‘networks’ without question ‘Friends’ = Popularity

  5. Sexual Exploitation and the Internet Online Grooming Uploading and sharing of inappropriate images Wish Lists Gaming Credits Exchanging images/ performing on a webcam Pornography

The conversation quickly became sexual and he sent her inappropriate images of himself and asked her to do the same which she did. This then progressed to performing acts on a webcam. Her parents became aware after seeing some of her emails and contacted the police. The male was 29 years old and was in contact with a number of young women via the internet.

  13. Case Study Anna is 15. She meet’s group of lads on the bus. They are having a laugh and she decides to get off with them instead of her own stop. She finds herself on a quiet ally and one of the lads gives her some alcohol. Soon they start asking her to give them oral sex. She feels a bit drunk and the lads are crowding around her. She is scared and feels she has no option but to do it. The next day she finds out that one of the lads has recorded the sexual activity and uploaded it on to RedTube.

  14. UPLOADING Young people upload images of themselves and each other. May be unaware they have been filmed/ photographed. Most are unaware they are committing an offence. You can NEVER get the image back. Images end up on sites used by sex offenders.

  15. What is an Inappropriate Image? Media Merchandising e.g Playboy Modern Role models e.g. Katie Price Music Videos Porn fashion Access to pornography

  16. Sexual Exploitation and Technology Sexual exploitation online and in the ‘real’ world is not clear and separate. Technology is increasing used to meet, groom and control young people. What may start online spills over into the ‘real’ world and visa versa. Young people are becoming increasing desensitised to the differences and risks and are ‘normalising’ approaches by adults wanting to exploit them.
