  1. FOLKLORE: Oral traditionsThe traditional beliefs, myths, tales, and practices of a people which have been shared in an informal manner - - usually via word of mouth.

A folktale is a story based either on a real or fictional person. • Often begins with :Long, long ago” or something similar. • Have main characters with extraordinary abilities: as great strength. • Describe how the main character copes with the events of everyday life • May involve crisis or conflict • Superstitions and unfounded beliefs are important elements. • Takes place anytime, any place • Animals can talk

A fairy tale is a story with imaginary characters such as witches, giants, dragons, ogres and fairies. • Usually begins with “Once upon a time” and end with “And they live happily ever after.” • Have good and evil characters • Have heroes which are often princesses or princes • Generally contains magic • Have a problem and a solution • Have events happening in “3” or “7s” • Carries cultural information about the time and place a story was told. • Truth prevails, hard work overcomes obstacles, love, mercy and kindness are the greatest powers of all.

  4. A fable is a very short story that makes an educational or cautioning point. • Often ends with, “And the moral of the story is…” • Uses animals as characters that speak and act like humans • Have a conflict and resolution (problem/ solution)

A myth is usually an old story that explains features of the natural world. • Often include gods and goddesses and other supernatural characters who have the power to do unexpected things • Try to answer serious questions about how things began or occurred • Gives a religious explanation for something

  6. A Legend is a story told as if it were a historical event. • May or may not be an elaborated historical event. • Inspires a body of stories, or anything of lasting importance or fame. A Tall Tale is an extravagant, fanciful or greatly exaggerated story. Usually focuses on the achievemants of the ultimate hero.

Does the story tell about something real? • Could the story’s events be real, or are they totally unbelievable (fiction)/ • Are the characters human or animal? • If the characters are human could they have been real people? • Are characters doing things that are typically human or are they doing things that are superhuman?

  10. Does the character face a problem that must be solved? • Does the story teach a lesson? • Can you tell when and where the story takes place, or could it be taking place at anytime and anywhere? • Does the story take place long ago? • Are the people in the story ordinary/common people, or are they royalty? • Is there any mention of God or gods in the story?
