  2. Objective: • Students will be able to discuss and describe the 5 branches of Earth Science.

  3. Word of the Day: • Earth System: • Any of the one of the fields of study included in the 5 branches of Earth Science.

  4. Chapter 1.1 Earth Science Earth Science involves 5 areas of study (5 specialties): Astronomy - The study of objects beyond Earth’s atmosphere (galaxies, stars, planets.) Meteorology - The study of the forces that cause atmosphere to change and to produce weather. Geology - The study of rocks and Earth’s physical history. Oceanography - The study of Earth’s oceans. Environmental Science - The study of the interactions of organisms and their surroundings. AMGOE!!!!! Page 2

  5. Earth’s Systems There are 4 Earth Systems and they interact with each other. • Geosphere - Area of the surface of Earth down to its core (involves Geology.) • Atmosphere - Protective blanket of gasses that surrounds the earth. • Hydrosphere - All water on Earth and in the atmosphere. • Biosphere - All organisms on Earth as well as the environments in which they live. Page 2

  6. Geosphere There are 3 main parts of the Geosphere: • Crust - Thin, cool outermost layer • Comes in two kinds: Continental (Land) Oceanic (Ocean) • Mantle - Hot, molten (almost melted) second layer. Ranges from 100˚C to 4000˚C. • Core - Very hot solid center of Earth, made up of iron and nickel. Page 3

  7. Atmosphere Earth’s atmosphere protects the planet from harmful radiation and other stuff from space. • It is made up of mixed gasses: • 78% Nitrogen • 21% Oxygen • 1% mixed gasses Page 4

  8. Hydrosphere • 97% is saltwater • 3% is freshwater • Biosphere • All living things! “Technology” - Refers to the application of scientific discoveries Page 4

  9. Classwork: • 5 Branches Discussion Sheet: 1 - 7 Place in Binder page #5 • Science Autobiography • Page 9 - Questions 1 through 6 To be handed in.
