  1. Mini-Workshop on Thermal Modeling and Thermal Experimentsfor Accelerator Magnets CERN 30th of September, pm – 1st of October 2009, am Rob van Weelderen, Pier-Paolo Granieri (secretary)

  2. Participants Hervé Alain, Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse Bertrand Baudouy, CEA-Saclay Erwin Bielert, CERN/University of Twente Luca Bottura, CERN Christine Darve, CERN/Fermilab Pier Paolo Granieri, CERN/EPFL Jaroslav Polinski, Wroclav University of Technology David Richter, CERN Herman Ten Kate, CERN/University of Twente Arjan Verweij, CERN Rob van Weelderen, CERN ...

  3. Agenda Wednesday afternoon, 30th of September 2009 14:00 – 14:30 Welcome & introduction to the workshop (Rob van Weelderen, CERN) 14:30 – 15:00 Heat management issues - A perspective view centered on the design of superconducting devices (Luca Bottura, CERN) 15:00 – 15:30 The modeling of temperature distributions in magnet cross sections with COMSOL (Erwin Bielert, CERN/University of Twente) Break 16:00 – 16:30 Title (Arjan Verweij, CERN) 16:30 – 17:00 Title (Hervé Alain, Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse) 17:00 – 17:30 Phenomenological and Numerical Studies of Superfluid Helium Dynamics in the Two-Fluid Model (Christine Darve, Fermilab)

  4. Agenda Thursday morning 1st of October 2009 09:00 – 09:30 Heat Transfer in Superfluid He through Porous Cable Insulation (Pier Paolo Granieri, CERN/University ) 09:30 – 10:00 Status on He II heat transfer through electrical insulation for accelerator magnet (Bertrand Baudouy, CEA-Saclay) 10:00 – 10:30 WUT experience in measurements of the heat transfer thought SC cable electrical insulation (Jaroslav Polinski, Wroclav University of Technology) break 11:00 – 12:30 Discussion & closure (All)

  5. Purpose It is the intention that this first meeting is foremost an information exchange onessential points that will lead us to: – Establisch a common understanding where each person's short and long term objectives stand relative to eachother and to the objectives of the various funded R&D programs. – Establish an understanding of the modelisation tools being used, their strengths, weaknesses and limititations. – Establish an understanding of the measurement methods and instrumentation being used, their strengths, weaknesses and limitations. This should lead us to discuss: – Possible new areas/new tools worth investigating. – Best practices/tools to overcome the modeling limitations found up to now. – The distribution of work with respect to the various funded R&D programs.

  6. Desired outcomes (1/2) Modelisation Transition of theory to validated numerical method: check-list Numerical tools in use: check-list Alternative numerical tools/methods to be investigated: list For the future: towards recommended methods/tools per application domain

  7. Desired outcomes (2/2) Measurements Instrumentation issues: list Methods: list For the future: identify missing data Harmonization of work with respect to the various funded R&D programs
