  1. Lake Kiowa WGA Lets Have Some FUN With The “USGA Rules”

  2. Definitions • Water Hazard • Margins of a Water Hazard(yellow) • Lateral Water Hazard (red)

  3. A water hazard is • any sea, lake, pond, river, • ditch, • surface drainage ditch or • other open water course (whether or not containing water) and • anything of a similar nature on the course. All ground and water within the margin of a water hazard are part of the water hazard.

  4. A ball is in a water hazard when it lies in or any part of it touches the water hazard. This also includes the Lateral water hazards.

  5. Margins of a Yellow Water Hazard • When the margin of a water hazard is defined by a line on the ground, the line itself is in the water hazard. • The margin of a water hazard extends vertically upwards and downwards • Stakes or lines used to define the margin of or identify a water hazard must be yellow.

  6. Lateral (RED) Water Hazard • A “lateral water hazard” is a water hazard or that part of a water hazard so situated that it is not possible, or is deemed by the Committee to be impracticable, to drop a ball behind the water hazard in accordance with Rule 26-Ib. • All ground and water within the margin of a lateral water hazard are part of the lateral water hazard.

  7. Margins of a Lateral (RED)Water Hazard • When the margin of a lateral water hazard is defined by a line on the ground, the line itself is in the lateral water hazard. • The margin of a lateral water hazard extends vertically upwards and downwards • That part of a water hazard to be played as a lateral water hazard must be distinctively marked. • Stakes or lines used to define the margin of or identify a lateral water hazard must be red.

  8. Holes with a Water Hazard • # 2 • # 4 • # 8 • # 9 • # 13 • # 14 • # 15 (concrete drainage ditch) • # 16

  9. 3 ways to Play from a YellowWater Hazard • play the ball as it lies without penalty ( Rule 13-1); or  • under penalty of one stroke; play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or  • under penalty of one stroke; drop a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped

  10. How to Play from a RED water hazard • under penalty of one stroke; drop a ball outside the water hazard within two club-lengths of and not nearer the hole than (i) the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard or • under penalty of one stroke; a point on the opposite margin of the water hazardequal distance from the hole. • Or any of the 3 ways you play from a yellow water hazard

  11. Local Rules • # 9, #13, and #16 all have a drop zone. • WGA only---Carry over Rule--- there are 3 options for these 3 holes • Hit ball in the water (1 stroke in and 1 stroke out) carry over bridge and drop (1 stroke) you are then hitting 4. • Don’t hit the ball at all, carry over & drop. You will be hitting 4 • Hit ball in water, hit again in water, carry over and drop. You will be hitting 6.
