  1. WASTE!

  2. Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)

  3. 500 billion pounds per year of MSW

  4. Various Types of Methane Vents: -The features in the photo on the left are collection devices, which pump the captured methane to a storage or burning location -Note that all these vents are at the top of the surrounding landscape (where the methane gas collects)

  5. Groundwater Monitoring Wells: -Groundwater monitoring wells are typically placed at the bottom of slopes (down gradient) to collect data on the groundwater flowing out of the landfill -Wells, like methane vents, can take a variety of forms

  6. Hazardous Waste Needs to meet one of four criteria: - Toxic - Flammable - Reactive/Explosive - Corrosive Over 40 million tons produced per year in the US! EPA lists 500+ compounds (RCRA)

  7. Treatment Options • Surface Lagoons/Landfills • Incineration • Underground Injection • Above ground buildings • Export • Bioremediation

  8. Surface Lagoon Construction

  9. Incineration

  10. Underground Injection

  11. Above Ground Building

  12. Export

  13. Bioremediation • Existing organisms/bacteria • Genetically modified to “recognize” manufactured chemicals

  14. Important Laws • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) everything hazardous waste • Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA – “Superfund”) abandoned • Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) – Protects underground and surface sources • Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) – 75,000 industrial chemicals, incl. PCB’s
