PRESIDENTS REPORT • PRESIDENTS REPORT • Rene’ Ketchum • Summer 2015 • Numerous emails getting speakers for summer conference • Flyer for Summer conference speakers • Attend May ACTE meeting: final updates on FACSE Grid • All our speakers made our grid/and openings • Excited to have Pearl Hart from Utah for Monday and Tuesday sessions on what Precision exams have to offer • Send names to Andrea/Dawn about possible board positions • Flyer sent out to all FACSE/FACS teachers for Summer Conference attendance • Prepare and send out Agenda: there will be some changes/additions • Emails to board: send board reports for Summer Conference • Contact board/ Debbie Handy/Mary Nagel to send out news about Martha Eldred passing. Sent out funeral arrangements. • Contact Jacqueline Brewster after her contact with me: offered to be secretary for our board meetings at Summer Conference 2015 • Attend AAFCS Conference in Jacksonville Fl. June • Amazing conference: many professor and directors of education at the University level • Attend Seminar on promoting FACS educators across the country • Debbie Handy and I: will consider a STAR Event for promoting FACS educators in our State: possibly 3 to choose from: • Promote and Publicize : my personal favorite • Career Investigation • Advocacy • Prepare Power Point for board report • Send out email for board reports again • Connect with Dottie for Board gifts and speaker gifts for Summer Conference

  3. PRESIDENT ELECTS REPORT • President-Elect Board Report • July 2015 • Andrea compiled a list of basic information to use when inquiring about future sites for Fall Conference. What our needs for the sites are as an organization, how many rooms we need for the conference itself, guest rooms, price of food, etc. • Andrea is in the process of creating basic guidelines for the President-Elect(s) to follow with help from Rene and Dawn. • Washington Annual FCS Conference Registration will be opened during WA-ACTE Summer Conference. • Survey was conducted of the membership for WA-FACSE and WAFCS to determined what topics should be our focus for Fall Conference. Annual conference planning was based on the results of this survey. • Dawn participated in a GoToMeeting for the WA-ACTE Professional Development Committee in March to share the usefulness of our member survey in planning our conference. • Dawn attended the Region V meeting in Kansas City and participated in the FCS section meeting, the Awards Committee meeting and a variety of educational sessions. Some of the speakers and vendors from this conference have agreed to participate at our annual FCS conference. • The slate of new board members is almost complete.

TREASURER REPORT • Treasurer Report – August 2015 • Our books closed at the end of the June. • FCS has been paid • All funds from 2014 Fall conference have been collected • Asked for an Application for Alaska Air card, they needed letters from 2 members, but after I got the letters from Leslie and Rene they wanted a copy of minutes giving me authority to get a card for our organization. • It would save some money on air fare…there is a companion fare every year • The books will be reviewed through a member audit

  6. BOARD REPORT • Summer 2015 • 2015-16 CTE GRANTS • Career and Technical Education (High Demand) • AP IINITIATIVES • May offer AP Psychology training if there is enough demand. Please sign up at the registration desk • CTE STATEWIDE COURSE EQUIVALENCIES • OSPI in accordance with legislation passed in the 2014 session, which amended RCW 28A.700.070, RCW 28A.230.097, and RCW 28A.230.010, developed statewide course equivalencies in Mathematics and Science for 21 CTE courses. • The courses were approved for Statewide Equivalency Credit by the State Board of Education in May 2015. • School districts must provide the opportunity to access at least one CTE course considered equivalent to Mathematics or Science. • The course should be recorded on the student’s transcript using the equivalent academic high school department designation and title • Information can be found in the Equivalency Credit Tool Kit 3.3 at: • http://www.k12.wa.us/CareerTechEd/Forms/EquivalencyCreditToolkit.pdf • For FACSE the equivalency courses aligned are: • CIP code # 190401 Consumer and Family Resources for Algebra 1 • CIP code # 190504 Food Science, Dietetics and Nutrition.

  7. PRECISION EXAMS FACS exams given 4386; pre-3412; posttests-about 10% of those given OSPI has entered into a state purchase for precision exams to be given at a reduced rate of $2-5.00/ per exam. They have pre and posttests available. Adult Roles and Responsibilities (310) Adult Roles and Financial Literacy A (317) Adult Roles and Financial Literacy B (319) Clothing and Textiles I (350) Clothing and Textiles II (353) Fashion Strategies (355) Food and Nutrition I (340E) Food and Nutrition II (343) Food Service Culinary Arts (345) Travel and Tourism (410) Child Development (320) Early Childhood Education I (323) Early Childhood Education IA (325) Early Childhood Education IB (328) Early Childhood Education II (329) Personal Financial Responsibility Preparing for College and Car Food and Nutrition I and Child Development had thehighest numbers given on these tests. Child Development test Data showed that we did well on parenting roles and responsibilities. (Need to improve Growth and Development and Health and Wellness) Food and Nutrition test data showed we did well in Safety and sanitation. (Need to improve on Dietary guidelines) 21st Century Skills Exam is newly written for Washington and is available with skills for all workers.

  8. CURRICULUM PROJECTS • The Careers in Ed. curriculum is going through an update. There should be a training at fall conference. • The Adult Childcare Basics curriculum has changed and we will be working on updates to the high school program. • Provided the Science Takeout training to 40 teachers. Will be looking at follow-up this year. FASHION CONFERENCE APRIL 23 or 30, 2016 Art institute of Seattle Key note will be LouiRedmann, Global Bottoms Men's and Youth Development Manager, VOLCOM, LLC Contests will take place in Fashion Construction, Recycle Redesign and Fashion Writing. FCCLA projects may be entered.

  9. COURSE APPROVALS for new courses The Re-Approval schedule due January 15, 2016 Family and Consumer Sciences and Health These schools may want to request a framework workshop by your ESD or WAVA group.

  10. CHILD DEVELOPMENT TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES • Sea-Tac area September 28-29, 2015 • Integrating Physical activity into Early Learning. • Diane H. Craft, Ph.D. – established Active Play Books in 2007 to provide a platform to make her knowledge and ideas accessible for child care providers and managers of child-focused organizations. TRAINING STIPEND You may apply for a training reimbursement one time per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30) for any amount up to $250.00. Eligible trainings include any state-approved annual continuing education training or the basic STARS training that meets the initial licensing requirement. To find out more go to: http://www.del.wa.gov/publications/PD/docs/training_reimbursements.pdf GRADS • Students are graduating, having healthy babies and moving on to post-secondary education. 20% of the GRADS students were recovered and we had an over 90% long term graduation rate. • DOH Continued Grant awards to 3 counties: Benton –Franklin Health Department, Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic, and Columbia Basin Health Association in Othello and 16 GRADS programs. • Currently, 9 district childcare centers have completed their Early Achievers Program. 7 Districts completed their business plans, which will increase the GRADS program sustainability. • New programs were funded at Mukilteo, and an additional program in Bellingham. Granger did an effectiveness study and is working towards implementing a GRADS program. • GRADS PLC will gather at fall conference. • Early Achievers grantees will be meeting Oct.20-21 in Olympia.

  11. STEM RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CTE TEACHERS (RCW 28A.410.2212): • At least 15 clock hours, or one-half of one annual professional growth plan (PGP), must have an emphasis on STEM integration for ALL CTE Instructors. This requirement applies to certificates being renewed starting in 2019. • The learning or activity must demonstrate authentic integration of science, technology, engineering and math, incorporating at least 2 of the 4 STEM elements. Only one element out the STEM learning experience is not considered an authentic STEM experience. For more information, contact Clarence “CJ” Dancer at clarence.dancer@k12.wa.us or 360-725-4467. See the resources at: www.nasafacs.org/teacher-recruitment-say-yes-to-fcs.html • A minimum of 20 positions were open this year in the state of Washington and the teacher preparation programs graduated 6 new teachers. • 3600 jobs were available nationwide.

WSU REPORT • Washington State University • Report • August 2015 • The Department of Human Development is moving forward with a number of initiatives that serve to move the program forward -- implementing a new strategic plan. Dr. Handy serves on the strategic planning committee and is the lead for one initiative and co-lead for a second initiative. She also leads the program assessment efforts for the department, serves on the curriculum, advising, and annual review committees. • Family and Consumer Sciences Education enrollment is steady. One student teacher is placed for the fall semester, and four are anticipated for the spring semester. • Dr. Handy is co-chair of the Professional Education Advisory Board for the College of Education at WSU. She has been asked to serve another term in this role. She also serves on the Teacher Education Committee. • Dr. Handy is serving as the Past-President of the Washington Association of Family and Consumer Sciences for 2015-2016. She has been selected to serve on the Council for Certification for the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) and as Secretary for the National Association for Teacher Educators of Family and Consumer Sciences. She was an active participant in the “Filling the Pipeline” discussions at the AAFCS Annual Conference and will help with Washington efforts to encourage youth to consider careers in Family and Consumer Sciences, particularly in education. • Dr. Handy is working with faculty from the College of Education, the Agricultural Education program and Pullman High School to review the possibility of revising the CTE certification program at WSU. • Respectfully submitted, • Deborah J.   13. FCCLA REPORT • Washington Family, Career and Community Leaders of America • Report • August 2015 • State Officers have been elected to represent all 10 regions for 2015-2016. Teachers are changing at some schools with officers. • The WA-FCCLA State Leadership Conference was held March 25-27, 2015 in Wenatchee. Nearly 600 attended. • Approximately 200 Washington delegates attended the national leadership conference in Washington D. C. • Seven chapters received their Financial Literacy grant awards, sponsored by Jump$tart Washington. • The WA-FCCLA Board of Directors is preparing goals for the 2015-2016 year. New board member applications are being reviewed. • The WA-FCCLA website continues to be updated with information necessary for chapters and advisers. • Respectfully Submitted, • Deborah J.   16. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR • Accomplishments since March, 2015 Board meeting: • Updated the FACSE scholarship application form and procedures as directed by the Board at the March meeting. I forwarded applicant’s information to the Executive Committee for selection. Debbie Strayer is receiving the Board Member scholarship for summer conference. Our recipient for a member at large turned hers down after her district decided to fund her conference expenses. • Completed a newsletter article about the scholarship forms for a spring newsletter. • Completed the WA-ACTE Quality Section Award application for FACSE and submitted it by the May 1 deadline. • Completed a phone conference with two U of W professors who are working with a grant application to teach workshops about diabetes management that could involve training for FACS teachers in the future. • Selected and purchased a gift for Martha Eldred’s family on behalf of the FACSE Board. • Created and updated forms for the new Board Member packets. Compiled the packets for the training during Summer conference. • Started preliminary work for clock hour application for the fall Annual Conference and for one of the Pre-Conference sessions.

LEGISLATIVE REPORT • Office or Committee: Legislative • Members: Tricia Littlefield and Rachel Aszklar • Summary of activities completed to date: • Attended Washington WA-ACTE Legislative CTSO Day- February 2015 • Met with other CTSOs from all over the State • FCCLA students met with Legislators from region and advocated for Career and Tech Education • Attend current ACTE Legislative meetings at SEATAC/ Thursdays Go To Meetings • Encourage WAFASCE to sign Coalition Letter to support CTE funding • Emailed WAFACSE teachers on personal email to inform on legislative issues • Informed WA_FACSE about current Legislative Issues in Washington State • Emailed Legislators (including budget writers) and asked for them to support the final the budget language includes the CTE MSOC CORRECTION language as asked for by OSPI and the Washington ACTE • Legislative Update as of 7/8:

The 2015 retention goal was met with a 3% margin. Though one of the largest sections, WA-FACSE could employ the ‘Each One Reach One’ membership campaign to reach out to non-members in the profession. Kathy attended the Spring meeting in Leavenworth - Shari was unable as her school was participating in the state basketball tournament. • 2. We contacted and confirmation from presenters who are willing to present at Fall Conference - as per what was requested through the survey -Co- President Elect Dawn Boyden found out our membership wanted • 3. Continued to network with teachers throughout the state who needed help with curriculum or FCCLA questions. • 4. Kathy will be presenting at summer conference and doing a round table about Washington Jump-Start grant.

WEBMASTER • Webmaster Board Report • July 22, 2015 • The wafacse.org website has been updated as information is submitted to webmaster. • Committee chair attended the Leavenworth Board Meeting and reported on website progress. • Dawn has continued to correspond with website users needing information via the “contact us” option. • Articles have been submitted for the FACSE newsletter. • Registration ready to open on RegOnline and will be activated soon. • Options were explored for using less expensive registration options, but they don’t provide needed features.
