  2. DEVELOPMENTS IN OECD SHORT-TERM ECONOMIC STATISTICS SINCE JUNE 2006 Covers: • Work arising out of the June 2006 STESWP meeting • Other initiatives / activities • New STESWP initiatives • Other activities in STD

WORK OUT OF JUNE 2006 STESWP MEETING • Finalisation of Index of Services Production Manual (agenda item 6) • Finalisation of work of Task force on Administrative data – framework (agenda item 2) • Publication of OECD Data and Metadata Reporting and Presentation Handbook following CSTAT consultation (agenda item 5) • Creation of web-based revisions analytical database for key STES (agenda item 3) • Implementation of revised classifications / backcasting (agenda item 7)

WORK OUT OF JUNE 2006 STESWP MEETING (cont.) • Recent developments innovations in the presentation and dissemination of short-term economic indicators + new OECD STES facilities (agenda item 4) • Evolution of short-term economic statistics in large emerging and other non-member economies (agenda item 9)

  5. “NEW” STESWP ACTIVITIES / INITIATIVES • Infra-annual statistics on capital expenditure and company profits (agenda item 10) • Producer price indices for services – SPPIs (agenda item 12) • Development of United Nations guidelines and recommendations on distributive trade statistics (agenda item 13)

  6. OTHER STD ACTIVITIES / INITIATIVES • Publication of comparable annual and quarterly unit labour cost indexes for OECD Member countries in MEI • Further expansion in the publication of short-term economic statistics and metadata in MEI for Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Russia & South Africa • Further expansion in range of BTS / COS (qualitative indicator) series published in MEI – work co-ordinated with European Commission • Further expansion in co-ordinated data collection activity with Eurostat, IMF and ECB • Development of OECD corporate database facilities

  7. BUSINESS AND CONSUMER OPINION SURVEYS • OECD workshop on BTS / COS back-to-back with CIRET meeting in Rome – 19 September 2006 • Extensive consultation / co-ordination with the European Commission • Recommendations from two task forces: response rates + minimisation of respondent load; harmonisation of survey operations and technical design – new international standards • Further development of portal on OECD website for BTS / COS data • Publication of joint OECD / CIRET Journal of Business Cycle Management and Analysis – 3 times a year

  8. CO-ORDINATION OF DATA COLLECTION ACTIVITY WITH EUROSTAT AND IMF • Further development of automated processes for data transfer between Eurostat and OECD databases and vice versa • Further Eurostat national series now published in MEI – MEI series (US, Japan, China, India, Russia) available for Eurostat • Discussions with IMF on their use of OECD data base facilities (MetaStore, OECD.stat)

  9. DEVELOPMENT OF OECD CORPORATE DATABASE FACILITIES • Implementation of OECD.stat and MetaStore facilities – large project • Continued focus for STS on content issues – user friendly presentation of data + work on metadata • Metadata work – improvement in quality, consistency of metadata for both STES for Member countries and large NMEs – more analytical metadata in future?
