Adverbs. By: Daniel M cLaren. Adverbs in Englsih. To have a good understanding of adverbs, you must first know what they do in English. Adverbs in English are used to describe verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. They usually end in “- ly ”.

Adverbs in Englsih • To have a good understanding of adverbs, you must first know what they do in English. • Adverbs in English are used to describe verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. • They usually end in “-ly”. • Ex. I walked to the store quickly. (describes “walked”) • Ex. He walked a very big dog. (describes “big”) • Ex. She moved quite slowly because of her injury. (describes “slowly”)

  3. Adverbs in Latin • Adverbs have the same role in Latin as they do in English. • Adverbs in Latin can have “–e” or “–iter” additions to adjectives. • Ex. Adjective Adverb • strenuus-active, energetic strenue- strenously, hard • celer- quick celeriter- quickly • However, all adverbs do not have endings like this.

  4. Adverbs in Latin • Adverbs usually describe the time, manner, or place of the verb’s action. • Ex. Marcus adhucdormit. • Translation: Marcus is still sleeping.
