  2. What is a Run-On sentence? A run-on sentence has at least two independent clauses that have been put together without correction punctuation.

  3. Sentence Lengths Run-ons can have a variety of lengths. The sentence could be only a few words such as: I eat he runs. The sentence could also be infinitely long such as William Faulkner’s sentence in Absalom, Absalom!, which contains 1,287 words.

  4. How to fix a Run on To fix a run-on either: 1. Separate the two independent clauses. 2. Join the sentences with a comma and a subordinating conjunction: after, although, so that, etc. 3. Add a semi-colon, a comma, or a colon (; , :)

  5. Example: Incorrect: It is nearly noon there is no way we will be able to beat the crowd to Chick-fil-A. Correct: It is nearly noon; there is no way will be able to beat the crowd to Chick-fil-A. It is nearly noon. There is no way will be able to beat the crowd to Chick-fil-A. It is nearly noon, so there is no way we will be able to beat the crowd to Chick-fil-A.

  6. Another Type of Run-On • A comma splice is the use of a comma to join two independent clauses where the clauses are not connected by a conjunction, semicolon, or period, and is also a run-on.

  7. Example of a Comma Splice • It is nearly noon, there is no way that we will be able to beat the crowd to Chick-fil-A. You fix a comma splice the same way as a run-on; with a colon, semicolon, or a period.
