  1. photosynthesis Capturing and Converting sunlight

  2. PHOTOSYNTHESIS-Photo: means “light”-synthesis: means “putting together”Photosynthesis-using light to make food

  3. PHOTOSYNTHESIS • Takes place in the chloroplasts in green plants (which contain chlorophyll) • The process can be described in two steps: 1.capturing sunlight and 2.converting sunlight

  4. STEP ONE OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS • This occurs when energy in the form of sunlight is captured by the chlorophyll in a chloroplast • This can only happen when the sun is shining

  5. Step two of photosynthesis • The energy that has been captured is converted into the energy found in food • Radiant energy of sunlight is converted into chemical energy of food • The food produced is glucose

  6. Requirements for photosynthesis • Sunlight • Chlorophyll • Carbon dioxide • Water

  7. Word equation Carbon dioxide+Water+ Sunlight  Glucose+Oxygen

  8. Chemical equation for photosynthesis 6CO2+ 6H2O+sunlight C6H12O6+ 6O2  Makes + and

  9. RESPIRATION Using the energy in food

  10. Autotrophs • make their own food (green plants)

  11. Heterotrophs • eat green plants or other animals that eat green plants

  12. Are you an Autotroph or a Heterotroph?

  13. respiration • Process in which simple food substances such as glucose are broken down and the energy they contain are released. • Takes place in the mitochondria

  14. Respiration • Food enters the mitochondria • Food is broken down when it combines with oxygen • Water and carbon dioxide are produced as waste products • Energy is stored in a chemical compound called ATP until needed

  15. Word equation Glucose+OxygenCarbon Dioxide+Water+ATP 

  16. Chemical equation for respiration C6H12O6+ 6O2 6CO2+ 6H2O+ATP

  17. Chemical equation for photosynthesis 6CO2+ 6H2O C6H12O6+ 6O2 Chemical equation for respiration C6H12O6+ 6O2 6CO2+ 6H2O+ATP
