John 16 • Quick Review: • Last Monday: We continued our discussion of the Upper Room Discourse (chapters 13 through 17) • Remember that Jesus has less than 24 hours in His earthly life • Chapter 16 continues directly with a fulfillment of the last four verses of chapter 15… • Heavy chapter for tonight! • Remember that Jesus is comforting the disciples • They are starting to ask “What’s in it for me?” Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

  3. John 16 – V. 1 - 6 • V. 1 • “Offended”, Skandalisthete/Skandalizo: scandalize or cause to stumble. The (painful) persecution always comes from the religious world…it comes from within • Opposition comes (apparently) in the name of God; blind zeal for God...to be scattered • Zechariah 13:7 • Matthew 26:31 Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

  4. John 16 – V. 1 - 6 “Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.” • V. 1 • Let’s compare this to 1st John 3:13 By the time John wrote this gospel, the synagogue had become an institutionalized center of enmity to the gospel Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

  5. John 16 – V. 1 - 6 • V. 2 • The professing Church has boasted that it would convert the world. The world has converted the “professing church.” The persecution of Christ’s people comes from the religious world • The delusion that the perpetrators would imagine that they were doing God a service: Has the church converted the world—or is it the other way around? Proverbs 29:27; Amos 5:10 Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

  6. John 16 – V. 1 - 6 • V. 5 • 4 times we see the word lupe, inward grief, sorrow; inner pain that hurts too much to cry • “Whither goest thou?” vs. 13:36 • 13:36 – The concern was for Jesus • 16:5 – The concern is self-centered Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

  7. John 16 – V. 7 - 11 • In verses 7 – 11 we see the Holy Spirit’s ministry to the world • The whole setting is one of something better – if Jesus did not go away, He would be hindering a bigger benefit Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 7 - 11 • V. 7 • “It is expedient,” sumpherei • (sun = together and phero = to bear or bring) • Bringing one together with good things; profitable • Used twice: here and In John 11:50 • Used as a personal pronoun, “I” is emphatic Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 7 - 11 • V. 7 • If you think about it, Jesus was saying that there was something better than His being among them at the time • He was localized – could not be in two places at the same time • He regained omnipresence after His departure Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 7 - 11 • V. 7, 8, 10 • Three different Greek words are used for Jesus’ departing: • V. 7 – Apeltho, go away; leaving in general • V. 7 – Preutho, to depart for a specific purpose (so He could send the Comforter) • V. 10 – Hupago – I am leaving Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

  11. John 16 – V. 7 - 11 • V. 8 • “When he is come”: Masculine pronoun (three genders in Greek) • Normally pronoun agrees with the gender of the noun it is replacing. The word “spirit” is neuter; the masculine pronoun emphasizes the personhood of the Holy Spirit • (In other places, the neuter pronoun is used in keeping with the correct grammar) • Compare to 2 Thessalonians 2 Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 7 - 11 • V. 8 • They did far more for an absent Lord than they ever did while He was with them in the flesh • “...reprove the world of sin,” Elegxei, convict; to refute an adversary completely; to demonstrate guilt so the truth of the charge will be acknowledged; to bring in a verdict of guilty • Objective condemnation, not subjective realization Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 7 - 11 • V. 8 • The Holy Spirit ought not to be here at all: Christ ought to be here • The Father sent Him • The world would not have Him • The Holy Spirit being here is a testimony to a Christ-rejecting world • But He would not leave us orphans • Taking the place of an absent Christ, the guilt of the world is demonstrated, Elegxei Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

  14. John 16 – V. 7 - 11 • V. 8 (9, 10, 11) • “...of sin...of righteousness,…of judgment” Peri • (“of”?) • “in respect to” • “concerning” • Krisis, damnation, condemnation, accusation, judgment Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 7 - 11 • V. 9 • “of sin…” • Harmartias, missing the mark • General area in which all unsaved miss the mark • Always used for sins of omission as well as commission • The sin of unbelief is the sin which damns, the finally unforgivable sin • This will be what separates us – not sin • All have sinned, but not all will be guilty of unbelief Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 7 - 11 • V. 10 • “of righteousness…” • Christ is the standard of righteousness • The Jews, as most people, regarded only moral offenses, transgressions of the ceremonial law, and deflections from religious tradition as sin (Matthew 15:2) • Hupago, I am going: emphasizes personal relationship; separating • Himself...progressive revelation Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 7 - 11 • V. 11 • Men shall be convicted to judgment because Satan has been judged • Kekritai, judged, is a perfect passive indicative form of the verb “to judge” • Completed actions; refers to the cross judgment of Jesus Christ • Nothing awaits the world but judgment Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 12 - 15 • V. 12 • In verses 12 – 15 we see the Holy Spirit’s ministry to the believer • “bear,” Bastazo – does not mean the sense of endure or tolerate, but is the sense of carrying something • Didn’t He say that once before? • Yes, but this time it is a testament to the need for the Holy Spirit “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.” Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 12 - 15 “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. (14) He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you.” • V. 13 -14 • “guide,” hodegeo – to lead the way…suggests a pilgrimage and a process of moving forward Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 12 - 15 7 • V. 12 -13 • How many things will the Holy Spirit do?: • He would guide believers into all truth • He would not speak of Himself • He would speak what He hears • He would show believers things to come • He would Glorify Christ • He would take of the things of Christ • He would show them unto His People Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 12 - 15 • What else does the Holy Spirit do for us? • Let’s examine the verbs concerning Him in the New Testament • He quickens us (John 3:6) • He leads us (Romans 8:14) • He gives us assurance of our sonship (Romans 8:16) • He helps our infirmities by making intercession for us (Romans 8:26) • He loves us (Romans 15:13) • He indwells us (1 Corinthians 6:9) • He has sealed us unto the day of redemption (Ephesians 4:30) Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 12 - 15 • V. 12 • “Ye cannot bear them now,” Bastazein, to carry off • The Holy Spirit would complete their understanding... • “...guide,” Hodegesei: hodos, way; hegeomai, to lead... to the Truth • (Compare to 14:6 – the Way, the Truth, the Life)

John 16 – V. 12 - 15 • V. 13 • Pasan, “all”, an adverb which means “completely” • He will completely lead you into truth • His revealing to the apostles New Testament truth was complete, not partial • The adverb “complete” implies the inspiration, inerrancy, and authority of the New Testament (Psalm 25:5) • Their lack of understanding demonstrated the need for the Holy Spirit to come Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 12 - 15 • “He will not speak of Himself” (Compare Abraham and Eliezer, Genesis 24; Boaz and the unnamed servant, Ruth 2) • Genesis 22 – The Akeda • V. 14 – Abraham knows he is acting out a prophecy, and proves it by naming the site Jehovajira – “In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen” • Abraham is a type of the Father, Isaac a type of the Son Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 12 - 15 • Two chapters later (24), Abraham gives an assignment to his eldest servant • He is asked to go to a far country to find a bride for Isaac • He sets up a “deal” between himself and the Lord that if certain things happen, he would know that that was the girl • Rebekah is brought back to marry a guy she’s never met • Abraham is the Father, the eldest servant is the Holy Servant, Isaac is the Son • Genesis 15 tells us his name is Eliezer (comforter) Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 12 - 15 • The book of Ruth • Ruth is a Gentile bride of Boaz, the Kinsman-Redeemer • Naomi is a type of Israel who, by an act of redemption, is returned to her land • Who introduces Ruth to Boaz? • An unnamed servant! • The Holy Spirit is always unnamed • John 16:13 – He will NOT speak of Himself • His commitment is to glorify Jesus Christ Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 12 - 15 • V. 13 • “Showing them things to come,” Anaggelei, show, declare, announce • Used of formal preaching of the Gospel (Acts 20:20; 1 Peter 1:12; 1 John 1:5) • “Things to come”: The only occurrence in NT. Not only eschatology but doctrines of ecclesiology, pneumatology, etc.; Epistles, Acts, etc. • The past (14:26); the present (15:26); the future (16:13) • Jesus’ Letters to Seven Churches “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; ”

John 16 – V. 12 - 15 • V. 14 • The Holy Spirit will glorify Christ; not Himself • Nowhere in the epistles has the Holy Spirit told us anything about the Father which had not previously been revealed in and by the Lord Jesus • He has told us many things about the Son, which Jesus uttered not in the day of His humiliation • 1 Corinthians 2:9-11; Isaiah 64 • He will guide, declare, and glorify Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 16 - 22 • V. 16 • First “see,” theoreo – to be a spectator, from which we get the word theater • The idea is that of contemplating Him, seeing Him face to face, looking at Him in the way the disciples were at the moment • Second “see,” orao – to comprehend • In a little while, they were going to seize intuitively upon all that Christ was. • Pentecost would make a big difference Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 16 - 22 • V. 19 • “Jesus knew...”: We need never be embarrassed about coming to Him with any problem or need (Isaiah 65:24) • When it hurts too much to cry: • 1) Remember, the Comforter has come…………. 7-15 • 2) Be assured that God will ultimately turn your sorrow into joy……………………………….20-22 • 3) Take advantage of your tremendous power ……………………………………………………………23-24 • 4) Claim the victorious Peace of Christ in every battle………………………………………………..25-33 Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 – V. 16 - 22 • V. 21 • Thlipseos: “anguish” is the usual word for “tribulation” in NT • OT childbirth illustration; deep sorrow turned into lasting joy • The definite article used implies “the woman” rather than “a woman” to prove the prophetic view • Might be a glimpse of Israel, after the rapture, appealing directly to Jehovah for help and not, as yet, using the name Jesus as the basis of the appeal Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

John 16 • V. 23 • Seventh and final utterance of “Verily, verily, in Upper Room Discourse • “...ask the Father in my name”: “Ask” occurs in two verbs • Erotesete, questioning (first ask) • Aitesete, make a request or petition (second ask) • Jesus is giving them direct access to the Father at this point (1st Timothy 2:5) Mastering the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
