Empowering Innovation: Horizon 2020 and the Future of EU Research Collaboration

The Horizon 2020 initiative, proposed during the Tokyo Forum on December 14, 2012, introduces an €80 billion research and innovation funding program for 2014-2020. This program aims to enhance the European Union's global standing in research and innovation while addressing key societal challenges such as health, clean energy, and transport. By supporting excellent science, industrial leadership, and societal challenges, Horizon 2020 seeks to foster collaboration across SMEs, universities, and research institutes, ensuring access to cutting-edge infrastructure and promoting sustainable growth in Europe.

Why: EU policy objectives (climate, environment, energy, transport etc) cannot be achieved without innovation Breakthrough solutions come from multi-disciplinary collaborations, including social sciences & humanities Promising solutions need to be tested, demonstrated and scaled up Priority 3 Societal challenges

  10. Proposed funding (million euro, 2014-20) *Additional €1 050m for nuclear safety and security from the Euro-atom Treaty activities (2014-18).

  11. Role of the EIT and JRC in Horizon 2020 Three priorities to be supported by: * Second tranche pro rata from EIT and Social challenges (subject to review) **Additional €724 m for the JRC to be funded from the Euro-atom Treaty activities
