  1. Peter's Wife

    Text: Mk. 1:29-31
  2. Intro Contrary to what the Catholics teach in regards to Peter being celibate and the 1st pope, Peter did indeed have a wife! Mk. 1:29-31 (Mt. 8:14-15; Lk. 4:38-39) 29. And immediately after they came out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30. Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and immediately they spoke to Jesus about her. 31. And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she waited on them. From what is recorded about Peter’s wife, what can we learn from her? Peter's Wife
  3. Peter’s Wife In Scripture Was Peter’s wife alive and married to him during his active life in Christ’s service? I Cor. 9:5: She was a Christian and traveled with him. I Cor. 9:5 5. Do we not have a right to take along a believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Roman Catholics must ignore or explain away Peter’s wife in order to maintain that he was the first Pope! Peter's Wife
  4. Peter’s Wife In Scripture Do we know anything about their family life? I Pet. 5:1: Peter was an elder, so his wife was an elder’s wife! I Tim. 3:2; Titus 1:6: Elders had to be married. Hence, Peter was married. I Tim. 3:3-4: Peter and his wife had children so she was a mother. Titus 1:5-6: Their children were Christians! I Pet. 5:1 1. Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, Peter's Wife
  5. Peter’s Wife In Scripture Where were they in later years? I Pet. 5:13: “She who is in Babylon” – Who is she? Which Babylon? I Pet. 5:13 13. She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, Mark. Whether Babylon or Rome, it meant a long trip for Peter’s wife from Capernaum! “She”: The “brotherhood” Peter's wife Local prominent lady “Babylon”: The city on the Euphrates The military station by the same name on the Nile Rome Peter's Wife
  6. Peter’s Wife In Scripture I Cor. 9:5: She was a Christian and traveled with him I Pet. 5:1: Peter was an elder, so his wife was an elder’s wife! I Pet. 5:13: “She who is in Babylon” From all this we conclude that Peter’s wife was his faithful companion during his eventful life of preaching the gospel of Christ! Peter's Wife
  7. A Disciple of Jesus A Disciple of Jesus! She had Christ as a guest in her house (Mt. 8:14; Mk. 1:29-31) She is later described as a Christian, a “believing wife” (I Cor. 9:5) We cannot be surprised at her faith in light of what we know took place in Capernaum! Jesus spent a great deal of time in Capernaum and performed many miracles there! (Mt. 8:5-13; Mk. 2:1-12; Mk. 1:29-31; Jn. 4:46-54) She knew Jesus, and like her husband, chose to dedicate her life to following Him! Peter's Wife
  8. Her Life Benevolent: Mt. 8:14-15; Mk. 1:29-31; Lk. 4:38-39: In light of their actions here we infer they had been caring for her mother Hospitable (I Tim. 3:2: Elders had to be “hospitable”): Mk. 1:29-31: Invited Jesus and some of the other apostles to stay in their home. Mk. 1:32-34: The “whole city” gathered at the door. She would have been host. Jesus came to Capernaum as “His own city” (Mt. 9:1-7) because, that’s where His “home” was (Mk. 2:1-12), and perhaps it was Peter’s home that was the setting of the paralytic healed, by the removing of the roof! Peter's Wife
  9. Her Life Faithfulness in hardship (Mk. 1:16-18; Mt. 19:27): Acts 4:1-3; 5:17-19, 40-41; 12:1-5: Persecution and imprisonment! Not always a happy life being an apostle’s wife! Peter’s life had its share of ups and downs! (Lk. 22:55-62; Gal. 2:11-14) Raising faithful children: I Pet. 5:1; Titus 1:5-6; Prov. 22:6: She likely played a major role in her children’s physical and spiritual development Prov. 22:6 6. Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it. From a fisherman’s wife, to a saint, a mother, an apostle’s and elder’s wife! Peter's Wife
  10. Conclusion As far as Scripture goes, Peter’s wife lived in the shadows, being a help meet to the man of faith who was her husband What we know of her makes us believe she laid up much treasure in heaven! Secular History records that eventually the couple reached Rome The year and circumstances are subject to conjecture, though traditions offer some possibilities. What is known is that they were present during the persecution of Christians in Rome, A.D. 64–67, by the Emperor Nero. Peter's Wife
  11. Conclusion The story of the martyrdom of Peter and his wife is found in the pages of The History of the Church (3.30), written by Eusebius, a historian of the early A.D. 300s In it he quotes from a much earlier source, Miscellanies (Book VII), written by Clement of Alexandria (circa A.D. 150–215). Peter’s wife suffered martyrdom just before him: “We are told that when blessed Peter saw his wife led away to death, he was glad that her call had come and that she was returning home, and spoke to her in the most encouraging and comforting way, addressing her by name: ‘My dear, remember the Lord.’” Peter's Wife
  12. Conclusion The Scriptures and secular history record that Peter had a wife! From the small record of her we have we can see a picture of a faithful wife, both to her husband and to the Lord! We may not know her name but we can see her example and learn from it! Peter's Wife
  13. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Child: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
