  2. The Royal Line • All you basically need to know is: • Queen Victoria came from a different family than Queen Elizabeth, even though they were both queens • Elizabeth was part of the Tudor family and Victoria was part of the Hanoverian family.

  3. The Parents • Victoria’s parents were the duke of Kent and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg. Victoria’s dad the Duke of Kent and her mom Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg and Victoria when she was 18.

  4. The Throne - Queen Victoria inherited the throne of Great Britain in 1837, at the age of 18. - She inherited the throne of Great Britain because her uncle William IV died, and he had no living heirs.

  5. Royalty in the Family • Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria • Married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg Goth • Bore nine children • Edward VII (Victoria’s son), had a son George V, who had two children, one of whom had a daughter Elizabeth II • Elizabeth II is Victoria’s great-great-great granddaughter

  6. The Reign of Victoria • Length of her reign: • Was coronated at 18 years old • 1837 to death in 1901 • 64 year reign • Significant because: • Such an extended period of time • Enabled her to make a strong impact • Victoria’s impact eventually “bestowed her name upon her age.”

Constitutional Monarchy • Background: • Monarchy that is limited by a constitution • Set of limitations on the monarch • People liked this, as it saved them from corrupt rulers • After French ruled Italy, people wanted this form of government • The first example was in England: • Magna Carta of 1215 was developed to control corrupt King John. • Could not abuse power • Helped her gain popularity • Victoria: constitutional monarch

Acquisition of territories Obtained commercial network in the East Source of raw materials Provide profits from trade to maintain empire Made Belfast a city-1888 Ireland’s second largest municipality Went into mourning for her husband when he died Displayed Victorian morals at the time Curtseying (polite, strict) Middle class Acted more like the middle class than previous royal heirs before her Chloroform (put in a handkerchief) Promoted its uses by using it for the birth of Prince Leopold Queen Victoria’s Accomplishments continued…
