Missouri Compromise

The Missouri Compromise of 1820 aimed to address the contentious issue of slavery in the context of the United States' expansion. With 11 free states and 11 slave states at the time, Congress faced a dilemma as Maine and Missouri sought statehood. The Compromise allowed Maine to enter as a free state and Missouri as a slave state while establishing the 36°30' line to limit slavery's expansion. Although it temporarily maintained the balance between free and slave states, the Compromise's underlying tensions foreshadowed the impending Civil War.
