  2. What is the Missouri Compromise? • The Missouri Compromise was a dispute in which Missouri would enter the Union as a slave state and Maine would enter as a free state. Slave and Free states had to be equal.

  3. There were 11 free states. • Free States: • Illinois • Indiana • Ohio • Pennsylvania • New York • New Hampshire • New Jersey • Vermont • Rhode Island • Massachusetts • Connecticut

  4. There were 11 slave states. • Slave States: • Kentucky • Virginia • Delaware • Maryland • Tennessee • North Carolina • South Carolina • Louisiana • Georgia • Alabama • Mississippi

  5. Missouri was added as a slave state and Maine was added as a free state.

  6. Who came up with this Compromise? • Henry Clay, a Kentucky Representative, proposed the Missouri Compromise.

  7. Henry Clay was born on April 12, 1777. • He died on June 29, 1852. • He was self-taught. • Ran for president 5 times and never succeeded. • He was the speaker of state 3 times. • Was nicknamed “The Great Compromiser.”

  8. In 1819, the slaveholding territory of Missouri applied to the Union. Northern States opposed it, feeling that Southern slaveholding states had to much power.

  9. In 1820, Maine had come into the union as a free state and Missouri came in a slave state. The Missouri Compromise resolved the issue of Missouri joining the Union. The Missouri Compromise Document.

  10. What was the Result of The Missouri Compromise? • The admission of Missouri to be a state marked the beginning of the long sectional conflict of slavery that lead to the American Civil War.
