Do you recognise this child? • Too loud / too quiet • Constant interrupting • Unusual intonation pattern • Own agenda • Over elaboration • 100 questions • Poor listening / attention • Literal comprehension • Assumes listener knowledge but doesn’t seek listener feedback • Limited non verbal communication • Difficulties initiating, continuing and ending conversations • Silent and passive • Misinterprets the communicative intent of others

  3. General Principles in tackling these • Need to change • Awareness of impairment • Motivation to change • Priority – what to work on first • Resources to help • Evidence of effectiveness of input

  4. Strategies • Verbal /non verbal cueing – planned ignoring, exaggerated boredom, agreed consistent responses, additional verbal explanations. Very specific and simple language. • Use of Visuals -graded hierarchy, charts, role play, voice recording, video feedback, behaviour modification visuals e.g., stop signs, first/then boards.

  5. Strategies continued… • Recognised Interventions • SULP, Friendship Terrace Social Stories, PECS, Direct teaching around skills such as figurative language, non verbal communication, social skills training etc. • Autism reference - Relate and explain behaviour in terms of the ASD.
