  1. Paper Clip Chemistry Elements, Compounds and Mixtures: • Each paperclip represents an atom of the ELEMENT listed below. Green = carbonRed = oxygen White = hydrogen Yellow = sodium • Elements can be alone or bonded to other atoms of the same element or different elements. A COMPOUND results when the atoms bonded together are from more than one element. • “Bonding” occurs in this model when the “atoms” are clipped together. The number behind an element symbol indicates how many of that type of atom are in the bond. Make 2 of each of the following molecules from the correctly colored paper clips: H2OCO2CH4C Na • “Mixing” occurs when atoms and compounds are together in a container, but not “bonded” (clipped together). Make a MIXTURE of the compounds you made above by placing all the molecules you already made, and add 2 of our own in a container. Gently shake to mix. DO NOT CLIP ANY OF THE MOLECULES, ATOMS OR COMPOUNDS TOGETHER… THEY ARE NOT BONDING, THEY ARE MIXING!  • Answer the following on a sheet of paper in your notes: • What is the difference between elements, compounds and mixtures? • Which substances above were compounds and which were elements?
