  1. March 2011 Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN)

  2. 6 The SUN Framework calls for scaling up efforts against rising undernutrition in a coordinated multi-stakeholder approach Unsatisfactory progress towards MDG 1... ...calls for coordinated action Rising number of undernourished people Millions Intention endorsed by 100+ organizations 1.050 1.000 950 900 850 0 1990–1992 1995–1997 2002–2002 2004–2006 2008 2009 Worldwide progress to MDG 1 %children < 5 underweight -1% p.a. 33% 26% ∆ = 9.5% MDG 2015 target Source: The State of Food Insecurity in the World, FAO (2009), Value for 2009 is a projection; Millennium Development Goals Report, 2008 (2006 data)

  3. We need to act now to scale up • FOCUS: there is renewed international focus on human rights as a basis for economic, social and human development, and on addressing food and nutrition security within that framework • EVIDENCE: there is abundant evidence on the impact of under-nutrition on infant and young child mortality and its largely irreversible long-term effects on intellectual, physical and social development as well as on health • RECOGNITION: there is widespread recognition (“a burden of knowledge”) that a series of well-tested and low-cost interventions can protect the nutrition of vulnerable individuals and communities and benefit millions of individuals if incorporated into agriculture, social protection, health and educational programmes 1 2 3 September 2010

  4. The burden of knowledge Therapeutic feeding for malnourished children with special foods Promoting good nutritional practices Increasing intake of vitamins and minerals Breastfeeding Periodic vitamin A supplements Prevention or treatment for moderate undernutrition Therapeutic zinc supplements for diarrhea management Complementary feeding Treatment of severe acute undernutrition Multiple micronutrient powders Improved hygiene practices including (esp. hand washing) De-worming drugs Iron-folic acid supplements1 Iodized oil capsules where iodized salt is unavailable1 Iron fortification of staple foods2 Salt iodization2

  5. SUN Road Map • Designed for National Authorities affected by under nutrition and development partners that seek to support them. Many countries are already Scaling up Nutrition. • Evidence based: long term and irreversible impact of under nutrition, and exceptional benefits of nutritional interventions. • Support to country-led efforts will differ in each context, it will be important that external support is coordinated through a clearly identified mechanism that also help ensure that this support strengthens and adds value to what already exists • Speakers at the MDG Summit side event challenged Governments and other stakeholders to demonstrate measurable results within 1,000 days of action. • Expectation that country-level progress can be demonstrated within this period: scale-up and increased impact is possible.

  6. 1,000 Days • In September 2010, on the margins of the Millennium Development Goals summit, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin hosted an event to launch “1,000 Days”. • 1,000 Days is a global effort supported by many partners to jumpstart the implementation of the UN-led Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Framework and Roadmap for addressing undernutrition during pregnancy and early childhood. • 1,000 Days represents both a crucial time period for a child’s physical and cognitive development, as well as a key window for action at the international and country level to scale up nutrition efforts.

  7. Priority responses for Scaling Up Nutrition

  8. People at the center of all considerationsElements of the SUN Roadmap focus on five levels People Action at country level A Know how andcapacity development B Global support functions C D Financing pathways E Governance

  9. Efforts of stakeholders need to be coordinated on all levels People "...Coordination of stakeholders to encourage synergy of purpose and complementarity of action" Action at country level Know how andcapacity development Global support functions Financingpathways Business Community Government (lead) Research Community NGOs Civil Society UN System Donors Governance

  10. How SUN is working to advance the Roadmap • Chaired by the Secretary General’s Special Representative for Food Security and Nutrition - meeting monthly • Under the patronage of the Chair of the SCN • Transition Team of 13 individuals from different constituencies • Strong roles of FAO and WHO, WFP and UNICEF • Linked to Governing Bodies (CFS, WHA, ECOSOC) • Taking responsibility for advancing the Road Map • Six “Facilitated” Task Forces established • Linking to broader constituencies • High level tracking and milestones • Increasing number of countries requesting to participate • Total focus – aligning support to multi-stakeholder actions in country and demonstrating results
