ARTDECO: objectives and results Carlo Ghezzi
Project goals • Techniques and methods for the diffusion of “networked” enterprises among the Italian SME • Three, tightly coupled macro-goals • Organization and business models for networked enterprises • Acquisition, modeling and automatic management of business knowledge derived from heterogeneous sources, including natural language • Technological autonomic pervasive infrastructure, based on smart peripheral devices (Wireless Sensor Networks and RFID)
Goal 1: business models • Goal: flexibility and globalization • Decentralize activities • Continuously (re)structure the network of relationships • The network of relationships is highly dynamic • The research aims to cope with such dynamic scenarios • Identifying the basic determinants affecting the establishment of reliable and effective network
Goal 2: knowledge management • Identify and elicit knowledge (often tacit) where it manifests its relevance for the network • Find, extract, represent and formalize knowledge • In all various forms in which it may be embedded • In particular, natural language • Build a semantic model (via ontologies) of the business domains of networked enterprises
Goal 3: dynamic infrastructure • Flexibility requirements • New solutions for the technological infrastructure • Must support higher levels of dynamicity • The new information system • Intelligent peripheral systems, interacting with the physical world • Pervasive devices such as WSNs and RFIDs • Infrastructure implementation • Open standards; open source approach • Agile methods

Project extension • We have asked the ministry to postpone the end of the project of one year for the following reasons: • Lack of funding • Turn-over of young researchers and difficulty to replace the ones leaving the project
Main project outcomes • A first attempt to offer a comprehensive view on the problem of networked enterprises • From business and management issues to pheripheral infrastructures • A number of prototypes demonstrating the feasibility of various aspects in the project • A summer school for PhD students • A book (we are going to release it by the end of the year) • A high number of journal and conference publications • The training of a number of young researchers and doc/post-doc • The possibility to drive the definition of two study plans at Politecnico di Milano
Publications and talks • First two years • Journal publications: 18 • Conference publications: 45 international, 3 national • Third year • Journal publications: 11+1 • Conference publications: 21 international, 3 national • Scientific talks: 7 • Fourth year • Journal publications 19 • Conference publications 18 international, 1 national
Book • Title: Methodologies and Technologies for Networked Enterprises • To be published in the LNCS – Services Science Subline by Springer • Five parts • Organizational models of cooperation to assess and improve the status of existing networks and to even encourage the creation of new networks. • Strategies, methodologies, and tools to identify, elicit, and represent the (often tacit) knowledge originated by various different sources. • Innovative solutions at the level of the IT infrastructures, which must support the dynamic evolution and reconfiguration of business networks and of the underlying information systems. • Approaches to integrate active devices (sensors, passive data sources, actuators, …) within the IT infrastructure, to make the Internet-of-Things a key enabler of the networked enterprises. • A description of how all these stay together
