  2. First Step: identify the type There are 5 types of chemical reactions. 1. Synthesis 2. Decomposition 3. Combustion 4. Single Replacement 5. Double Replacement If you can identify which type of reaction you have based on the reactants given, then you can predict the products of that reaction.

  3. Synthesis Reactions • Reactants: Two elements • Products: check your charges, and put the two elements together into one formula! Example: 2Ca + Cl -->2CaCl2 -1 +2 Criss-cross to get subscripts!

  4. Decomposition Reactions • Reactants: One compound • Products: Break compound into elemental pieces. Check to see if you have diatomic elements! Example: 2KO --> 2K + O2 Diatomics: H, N, O, F, Cl, Br, I Diatomic!

  5. Combustion Reactions A combustion reaction is a specific sort of single replacement reaction that ALWAYS gives the same products: • Reactants: Hydrocarbon and oxygen • Products: Carbon dioxide and Water Example: C3H8 + 5O2 --> 3CO2 + 4H2O

  6. Single Replacement • Reactants: One element and one compound • Products: Determine the charges. Pair opposite charges to make a new molecule. Check to see if you have diatomic elements! Example: Zn + HCl ---> ZnCl2 + H2 +2 +2 +2 Criss-cross! Diatomic!

  7. Double Replacement • Reactants: Two compounds • Products: Determine the charges. Pair opposite charges to make two new molecules. Example: Pb(NO3)2 + 2KI --> PbI2 + 2KNO3 +2 -1 +1 -1

  8. LiCl → C3H4 + O2 → Al + K2SO4 → NaCl + Ni(OH)3 → Rb + Br2 → Li + Cl2 CO2 + H2O Al2(SO4)3 + K NaOH + NiCl3 RbBr Predict the products!
