  1. A Reading of Scripture John John 13:1-5

  2. John 13:1-5 1It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.

  3. John 13:1-5 2The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus.

  4. John 13:1-5 3Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;

  5. John 13:1-5 4so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

  7. Why Serve? (or why should we get involved?) • Jesus’ example • John 13:1-5 (Jesus teaches his disciples) One of the last acts Jesus did while on this earth was one of service • God commands it • Romans 12:9-16 (Personal responsibilities) “Love must be sincere. … keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. … ” • I Peter 4:10 (Living for God) “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”

  8. The body (HVCoC) needs it • I Corinthians 12:20-27 (One body, many parts) In order for Christ’s body, the Church, to accomplish its task, we must work together as a team. To dispel division, we are to be involved with one another. We need to assist each other as servants and friends – just like a human body comes to the aid of its injured parts. • Servanthood brings “rewards” • Luke 12:37-38 (Prepared servant served by God)) • John 12:26 (God honors servants) • I Kings 3:8-9 (Solomon, a servant, granted wisdom)

  9. Service is a Foundation of This Church A fundamental long-term goal approved by the congregation upon establishment of the Hardin Valley church: “Actively involve every member by developing and maintaining a functional structure that utilizes their individual spiritual gifts and talents.” Every year since its inception, the congregation has had a goal of: “Involve every member in some ministry of the church.” Every member should be actively involved in some ministry of the church!!!
