  1. BELLWORK Get your homework out so I can come collect it. Then answer this question: What has been your favorite genre that we have studied so far? Why was it your favorite?

  2. Today... • I have decided that we can do one more story this semester! • This is one of my favorites… I read this story when I was a Freshman at Metro! • It may seem at first that this story is a little slow… but the ending is great • So, for tonight...

  5. The Yellow Wallpaper • “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a short story that was written by Charlotte Perkins-Gilman in 1892 • This story dips into two genres: feminist literature and the Gothic

  6. So… what is a Gothic? • While having spooky elements, the Gothic predates the Horror genre • In the Gothic, a woman is usually in some form of peril and must be saved by someone or something in order to survive • Gothic pieces also center around more terrifying things than horrifying things-- there is not much gore, but the story itself is still very creepy • You will find that this story feels eerie • This is exactly how the Gothic genre feels! • However, it is mixed with another genre...

Feminist Literature • “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a Feminist Gothic, meaning that it deals with very specific issues • The eeriness of the story is not caused necessarily by the supernatural, but instead is caused by something different • In Feminist literature, problems to deal with gender and inequality are very prominent

  8. Feminist Literature • You will find that in “The Yellow Wallpaper,” the problems that are occurring center around one problem • This problem is rooted in Victorian era ideals and problems • So, let’s talk about this problem...

The Idea of “Hysteria” • In the Victorian era, women were not seen to have true mental health problems • Instead, much of their mental health problems were only rooted in the fact that women were women • This all-encompassing idea was called “hysteria”-- women were written off to just be hysterical • It was thought that hysteria could be cured with some rest and maybe, if women were lucky, some exercise or sunlight

The Idea of “Hysteria” • These ideas still were prominent well into the 1900s! • So, Perkins-Gilman wrote about the idea of hysteria • Her character, plagued with what is considered “hysteria,” probably actually suffers some form of postpartum depression • However, this idea did not exist back then!
