Layers of the Atmosphere. Overview. Remember, 99% of the atmosphere is within 32 km of the surface. As you gain altitude, pressure drops rapidly. Troposphere. Closest to the surface. ALL of weather takes place in the troposphere. Temperature decreases as altitude increases in this layer.

  1. Layers of the Atmosphere

  2. Overview • Remember, 99% of the atmosphere is within 32 km of the surface. • As you gain altitude, pressure drops rapidly.

  3. Troposphere • Closest to the surface. • ALL of weather takes place in the troposphere. • Temperature decreases as altitude increases in this layer. • The tropopause is the upper boundary - around 17km up.

  4. Stratosphere • Contains almost all the atmosphere’s ozone. • Temperature rises steadily (due to absorption of solar energy by ozone) • Upper boundary defined by the stratopause at around 50 km.

  5. Mesosphere • Temperature decreases with altitude. • Upper boundary defined by the mesopause at about 80 km.

  6. Thermosphere • Temperature increases steadily with altitude. • High temperatures exceeding 2000°C, but not measurable with regular thermometer. • Layer gradually blends into space, or the exosphere.
