    2. Prison and Asylum Reform The Prison Reform occurred during the early 1800s following the temperance movement. It was Americas first attempt at fixing their prisons. It happened because everyone was dissatisfied of the inmates living conditions and that mentally ill people were held at the same place as criminals.

    3. Before Prison Reform Before the prison reform began, criminals and the mentally ill were held together at the same facilities The people who were held in these facilities were very likely to obtain diseases and other infections. Women and Men were together in prison.

Dorothea Dix Dorothea Dix Compelled by personal experience to join the social reform Was horrified to discover jails often housed mentally ill people Traveled around America and Europe to take notes of how the jails and asylums were. Through efforts she passed laws To improve the conditions of the jails -emphasized treatment and Rehabilitation in these laws and in her entire cause as a social reformist.

    5. Auburn Process The auburn process was a system introduced by the Quakers that helped run the prisons. By having the prisoners do work and labor, the prisons were able to make a profit. This ensured that the prisoners would be supplied with necessities such as food. Auburn prison was the first prison in New York. It had the first electric chair system to rehabilitate prisoners. This prison was where the black and white striped stereotypical prison uniform originated from
