  2. Purpose of today • Think about ourselves as writers • Identify steps of the Writing Process • Identify genres • Clarify ways to collect student work

  3. Think about you as a writer… • Write about a time you did NOT like to write? • Write about a time you DID like to write? • Turn and talk, reflect on what you wrote.

  4. Why write?? • State Goal 3: • Write to communicate for a variety of purposes. • Writing is an essential skill of communication critical to the success of all students

  5. What do we know about writing? • Writing is complex. • There is no formula for good writing. • Before we can write well, we have to write. • What and how we write changes with the topic, purpose, and audience.

  6. What do we know about writing instruction ? • Teaching writing is complex. • Assigning writing is NOT teaching writing. • Assessing writing is NOT teaching writing.

  8. What do students need to become better writers? • Time • Ownership • Responses • Many models for writing • Teachers who write so they can draw on their own writing experiences.

  9. Genres of Writing • Expository- Explaining a topic. • Persuasive- Taking a position and defending one side of an argument. • Narrative- Describing a experience
