  3. Course Description • This category E course is intended for non-science majors and covers stars, galaxies and cosmology • Students with better science preparation, take AST 203. AST 101 is not for major credit. There is no credit in addition to AST 203 • Prerequisite: entry skill inmathematics (Skill 1) or satisfactory completion of D.E.C. C • There are other, parallel courses in astronomy: • AST 112 (1 credit), Astronomy Laboratory (observing): W 06:50-09:40 PM PHYSICS A125. • AST 105 (3 credits), Introduction to the Solar System: TuTh 12:50-2:10 ESS001 • AST 248 (3 credits), Search for Life in the Universe: TuTh 12:50-2:10 Harriman 137.

  6. MasteringAstronomy Web Site • Basic quizzes: required pre-lecture quizzes • A couple of post-lecture quizzes • Self-study problems, tutorials and conceptual quizzes • Register with the access code provided in the access kit that comes with the textbook • Enroll in the class FA07AST101

  7. Lecture/Recitation Schedule

Requirements • Pre-lecture online quizzes: 10% of the total grade, 12 best out of 14 • Post-lecture in-class quizzes (2 at home): 25% of the total grade, 10 best out of 12 • Two midterms: each 15% of the total grade • Final: 35% of the total grade, don’t miss except under the direst circumstances • Extenuating circumstances for missed assignments: require documentation

Grades • Grades will be posted on the Web site • Select a 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) to identify your grades • E-mail your PIN to the TA with your name and student ID ─ not the default 9999 • First-come-first-serve: duplicate PINs will be declined • PINs will be published in ascending order

Academic Integrity • Each student must pursue his or her academic goals honestly and be personally accountable for all submitted work • Representing another person's work as your own is always wrong.
