  1. Astronomy 101 Mrs. Painter Room 328

  2. January 9 • Kick off: What contribution to Astronomy did Newton give us? Why are these laws so important? Did you get on Stellarium? • Astronomy presentations • Einstein’s theory of gravity

  3. January 5 On your index card: What was something you did over break that had to do with Astronomy (be creative) • Library to finish early astronomer project • Finish notes on early astronomers

  4. December 20 • Exploring the Milky Way • Stellarium • Early Astronomers report –due January 9 • Library • Galaxy Greeting cards (if time) Learning target: I understand the impact early astronomers had on astronomy today.

  5. December 16 • Go over homework Answers • Newton and Einstein Learning Targets: Understand the Newton’s laws and how they apply to Astronomy

  6. Homework Answers pg. 621 • Geocentric model the sun and planets revolve around Earth. In Heliocentric model the earth and other planets revolve around the sun • Retrograde motion occurs when Earth which travels faster than Mars, passes Mars making Mars appear to go backwards (westward) in the sky. • Ptolemy showed planets moving in circular orbits around Earth and he used epicycles. • Copernicus placed the sun at the center of the Solar System, which was vastly different from the Earth centered theory. • Galileo was able to see the moons of Jupiter orbiting Jupiter, planets are circular disks not points of light, Venus has phases, moon is not smooth, and sunspots. • 1st path of a planet around the sun is an elipse. 2nd As planets orbits their orbital rate is determined by the area. Equal area in equal amounts of time. 3rd The square of the orbital period is equal to the cube of the distance from the sun.

  7. Math Practice Solution P2=d3 52=2.93 25=25 102=4.63 100 approximately = 97.3 (10/365) 2=.093 .0272 = .00074 =.093 = .00073

  8. December 14 • Daily Question • Stamp homework • Early Astronomy continued • Homework: Read 614-621 Do problems 1-7 (yes do the math practice!!!)

  9. Can anything travel faster than the speed of light? • http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2011-09/fyi-can-anything-move-faster-light • The scientists who last month appeared to have found that certain subatomic particles can travel faster than light have fine-tuned their experiment to check whether the remarkable discovery is correct.

  10. December 12 • Entry task-eclipses • Stamp homework • Notes on history of the universe and history of astronomy • Worksheet on history of the universe Homework: Read pg. 678-683 Section 2 Chapter 24 • Review pg. 683 pg. 1-7

  11. Eclipse • Did you see the eclipse Sat. morning? • At about 6:00 the moon totally disappeared, Why? • What color was the moon about 5:55? • Why was it that color? • When is the next time you can see a full lunar eclipse?

  12. 2011 eclipse • http://articlesofinterest-kelley.blogspot.com/ • http://mynorthwest.com/129/591502/Photo-gallery-Skywatchers-treated-with-total-lunar-eclipse?nid=129&sid=591502&pid=6 • http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/lunar-eclipse-2011-moon-completely-consumed-earths-shadow/story?id=15127958#.TuO872CONwA

  13. December 8 Agenda • Open note Quiz on Eclipses • Video Eclipse of the Century –Take notes • Eclipse worksheets • Homework: Read pg. 628- 629 Answer questions #5 and 6 on pg 629 • Most important homework—set your alarm for 5:45 Sat. morning. Get up and watch the lunar eclipse!!! Take pictures and bring them in on Monday!!!! • Here is a little explanation of how lunar eclipse work http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/videogallery/index.html

  14. December 6 Agenda • Syllabus • What are we studying this trimester • What is in the news right now!! • Curiosity video • Eclipses • Notes on eclipses • Video next class on Eclipse of the century with Guest teacher Learning targets: I can describe a solar eclipse
