  1. Drawing from Observation

  2. What are the benefits? Improved observation skills…learn to really see. Notice detail as well as the whole. Notice relationships and proportions. Observe and study how light and objects affect each other. Observe how we perceive depth. Learn to slow down and study. Realize improvement comes with practice. Become confident in attempting something new. Learn how the element of time effects perception. Learn to enjoy your world. Develop pathways in the brain.

  3. How Do we see? In reality we don’t see in 3D. Your retinas can only perceive 2D, height and width. Your brain turns what you see into 3D by looking for cues. Anatomy and Function of the Eye: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RE1MvRmWg7I

  4. Monocular Cues(One Eye) • Linear Perspective • Texture Density/Detail • Interposition (Overlapping) • Shading • Aerial Perspective • Motion Parallax – objects closer appear to move faster.

  5. Binocular Disparity(Two Eye) Calculates depth by sensing how the 2 images on your retina match up. Oculomotor Cues(Sensations of the muscles around your eyes) • Your brain uses the sensation of your eye muscles to calculate depth. Muscles around your eye contract and relax as they focus on near objects and distant objects.

  6. Question? • How Important is Learning to Draw From Observation?
