  1. MTH 116 A Review of Signed Numbers Sections 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3

  2. Important! • This section is optional, and is only included for those students who need to review adding, subtracting, and multiplying signed numbers. • Practice problems are found on pages 111-112, 113-114, and 116-117.

  3. Adding Signed Numbers • If you add two numbers with the same signs, keep the sign and add the numbers: POS + POS = POS NEG + NEG = NEG • If you add two numbers with different signs, subtract and take the sign of the greater number.

  4. Subtracting Signed Numbers • Every subtraction problem can be rewritten an addition problem: • KEEP the sign of the first number. • CHANGE the subtraction sign to an addition sign • CHANGE the sign of the second number. • Once you change the problem from subtraction to addition, refer to the rules for addition on the previous slide.

  5. Multiplying/Dividing Signed Numbers • If you multiply or divide two numbers with the same sign, the answer is positive: POS x POS = POS; POS / POS = POS NEG x NEG = POS; NEG / NEG = POS • If you multiply or divide two numbers with different signs, the answer is negative: POS x NEG = NEG; POS / NEG = NEG NEG x POS = NEG; NEG / POS = NEG

  6. Your Scientific Calculator • Look for a key that looks like this: (-) • Or this: +/- • (or something similar). • These keys are used to negate, or change the sign of a number. • Some calculators require the button to be pressed before the number, some after. Try yours to see which is which.
