National Council Mission The National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery exists to promote and develop the professional role of nurses and midwives in order to ensure the delivery of quality nursing and midwifery care to patients and clients in a changing healthcare environment.
National Council Strategic Plan • Provision of continuous professional development, education and research opportunities for nurses and midwives • Working in partnership with other agencies on research projects and practice development projects that are relevant to service and professional development needs • Developing and maintaining meaningful databases on research and practice development activities being carried out in nursing and midwifery in Ireland as a key resource for the profession • Continuing to develop the website of the Council as a key element in the information collection and dissemination strategy

Dementia Care Mapping Pilot Project NMPDU HSE-Dublin Project Manager-Mary O’Donnell 34 nurses trained to evaluate quality of life from the perspective of person with dementia and work with staff to develop plans to enhance care Examples of initiatives on the database
Essence of Care-Nutrition Benchmark NMPDU HSE South Project Manager-Sheila Doyle Essence of care framework used by the MDT to evaluate and improve practice in relation to nutrition of clients. Patients surveyed key improvements identified for example menus changed, assessment of nutritional status introduced Examples of initiatives on the database
Paediatric Neonatal Clinical Facilitator Project HSE West Project manager-Kathy Kennedy This project established a regional approach to the development of evidence based practice in neonatal care by establishing evidence based guidelines and procedure through consultation and developing staff skills in this area. Perinatal Liaison Mental Health Service HSE South Project Manager-Elaine Healy A nurse-led service that provides a comprehensive mental health assessment and focused interventions for families in addition to providing education to other staff involved in perinatal care Examples of initiatives on the database
