Demand for qualified talent not met Only13% of University graduates from emerging, low wage countries are suitable for employment in multi-national companies, and the No.1 reason given is lack of English skills. Countries including Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Venezuela, and Vietnam. Demographics of respondents • 144 respondents provided input to the survey results – a 9.88% response rate • 60%of respondents from the HR / People / Talent Management function • 60%of respondents from companies >1001 employees • 74%of respondents are “headquartered” in South Africa with many having offices internationally including Africa

Survey results • 95% of respondents indicated that English is the preferred business language for their company • The remaining 5% indicated that locally (SA) Afrikaans is spoken • In the other African countries, a mix of French, Portuguese and the local languages are spoken. • 63% indicated there is a formal policy dictating English as their official business language • Importantly, 85%of respondents recognized that English Communication Skills are important in enabling companies to meet business objectives

Survey results • 70%of respondents indicated that less than 50%of their employees speak English as their first language. • 79% indicated that English is not the only language used in verbal communication • 66% indicated that English is exclusively used for written communication in their business

Survey results • Other languages spoken and written in business include all 11 official languages in South Africa • In other African countries, French, Portuguese, German and local languages e.g. Kiswahili & Shangaan are spoken • Many respondents indicated that client needs often dictate what languages are used. • Only 22% of respondents indicated that they measure the English communication competency of their managers, executives or employees • Only 50% of the 32 respondents which indicated that they measure English competency have a formal language policy in place

Survey results • 28% of respondents indicated that they regularly translate documentation • Translation is mostly done to satisfy foreign visitors, business colleagues and compliance requirements in SA • Some respondents indicated up to R100,000 a year on translation costs • Others use internal employees to provide free translation

  11. Survey results • 94% of respondents indicated that they believe that their employees could be more effective in the workplace with improved English communication skills • Specifically the following areas were highlighted as areas that would benefit from the improvement:

Survey results What significant business challenges does your company face owing to the lack of English communication skills? • Understanding of instructions, business rules and business objectives are severely impacted by a lack of English communication skills • There is a massive impact on customer satisfaction levels, the ability to understand customer needs and ensure that the correct orders are placed • 7% of respondents indicated that their business professionalism and overall performance would be increased by improved English communication levels • Training is also significantly impacted in that majority of the learning content is only available in English • Talent management is impacted in that the recruitment of suitably skilled people, with the correct level business communication skills

Summary of Survey results • The use of English as a primary means of communication in African business is widespread and growing. • African companies recognise that to stay competitive in the global market, there is a critical need to improve English communication skills • Despite the extensive use of English in business, most respondents believe that improving English communication skills of employees will add significant value to their business. • Courses being utilised for this business critical area fail to sufficiently address the long term Business English communication skills needs of African companies. • Forward thinking and leading African companies wish to invest in long term programmes to improve Business English communication skills for all employees.
