Respect for participants • Is the privacy of the participant protected through confidentiality? • Is unconditional withdrawal from the research allowed? • Is there provision for participants to receive information (during the course of the study) that is relevant to their participation such as newly discovered risks or benefits? • Will the welfare of participants be monitored during the research? • Is there provision for the participants to be informed of the results of research? • Is there provision to make the study product available to the participant following the research?

Respect for community • What is the impact and relevance of the research on the local community and on the communities from which the participants are drawn? • What were the steps taken to consult with the concerned communities during the designing of the research • What is the influence of the community on the consent of the individual? • Will there be any community consultation during the course of the research? • To what extent will the researcher contribute to capacity building (enhancement of local healthcare, research capability ethics review)? • What is the availability and affordability of any successful study product to the concerned community following the research? • How will the results of the research be made available to the community?
