The Principle of Authority • "And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.“ Matt. 16:19 • Bound on earth ~ Bound in heaven • Keys ~ authority to open and close • Bind = prohibit, forbid • Loose = permit, allow
The Principle of Authority • “For we walk by faith, not by sight” 2 Cor. 5:7 • Faith ~ Follow all His directions • Sight ~ After things of this world • “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17 • Faith ~ hearing by the word • Heb. 11:6 “without faith it is impossible to please” • Word ~ “The seed is the word of God.” Lk.8:11
Example of Generic and Specific Authority “A Jewish Man” = any tribe of Israel “A man of Levi” = excludes all other 11 tribes Numbers 1:50 “appoint the Levites” “A priest” = could be any priest “High priest” = all other priests excluded Heb. 7:27 “as those high priests,” A specific command of God Excludes all other possibilities

Law of Harmony
Three Laws about Bible Authority 2. Law of Completeness Must Accept the Bible as God’s complete revelation II Tim. 3:16-17 “All scripture is given by inspiration” 2 Pet. 1:3 “all things that pertain unto life” Gal. 1:8-9 “preach any other gospel” “accursed” Must respect Silence of God’s Word 1 Pet. 4:11a “If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God;”
The Restoration Plea Where the Bible speaks, we speak, Where the Bible is silent, we are silent. Call Bible things by Bible names, Do Bible things in Bible ways. In matters of faith, unity. In matters of opinion, liberty. In all matters, charity.
Be careful with a person who says… But the Bible doesn’t say NOT to…. What Does the Bible Say ? 1. Law of Harmony We must study all of God’s Word 2. Law of Completeness We must not go beyond God’s Word
Three Laws about Bible Authority 3. Law of Instruction John 15:14 “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.” 1 Cor. 16:1-2 = contribution Command Example Inference Phil. 3:17 “be followers together of me” 1 Cor.11:1 “Be ye followers of me, …” Heb. 10:25 - a place of assembly Matt. 16:5-11 - Jesus implied the teaching
