  3. Turbidity • Turbidity: cloudiness or haziness of a fluid caused by individual particles (suspended solids, not dissolved) that are generally invisible to the naked eye

Turbidity • Can be caused by growth of phytoplankton • Human activities that disturb land can lead to high levels of sediments (runoff) or turbidity • High Turbidity levels reduce the amount of light reaching lower depths • Inhibits growth of photosynthetic organisms • Provides protection for juvenile fish

  5. Turbidity • Most widely used measurement unit is the FTU (Formazin Turbidity Unit) • Measured by measuring the transmitance of light • Also can be measured using a secchi disk (can’t be used in shallow water)
