  1. Ocean Water Chemistry 6th Grade

  2. Why is the ocean salty? Where did this salt come from? • Undersea volcanoes erupted, spewing chemicals into the water

  3. How many grams of salt are in one kilogram of ocean water? • 1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds • 1 kg of ocean water has 35 grams of salt! • Converts to about 7 teaspoons of salt per 2.2 pounds of water

  4. The total amount of dissolved salts in a sample of water is the __________ of that sample. • Salinity • Table salt = sodium chloride • When sodium chloride is dissolved in water, it separates into sodium and chloride

  5. What else makes up ocean water chemistry? • Sodium = 30.6% • Chloride = 55% • Sulfate = 7.7% • Magnesium = 3.7% • Calcium = 1.2% • Potassium = 1.1% • Other (including Nitrogen & Phosphorous) = 0.7%

  6. Ocean Properties • In most parts of the ocean the salinity is between 34-37 parts per thousand • Where would salinity be lower? • Where would salinity be highest?

  7. Where is the ocean “saltiest,” and where is it the “least salty?” • Salinity is highest: • in hot temperatures where water evaporates quickly • Evaporation makes salinity higher (Red Sea = 41 parts per thousand) • Salinity is lowest: • Near mouths of rivers • During heavy precipitation

  8. Effects of Salinity • Ocean water does not freeze until temperature drops to about -1.9 *C (or 28.58*F) (For other water, it is 0* C and 32* F) • Ocean water has a higher density and is more buoyant  it lifts up less dense objects floating in it

  9. Dead Sea has such high salinity that it is easy to float in it • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhL68D9BPiw

  10. Gases in Ocean Water • Less Oxygen in ocean water • Carbon Dioxide is 60 times as plentiful in the oceans as it is in the air • Ex. algae use for photosynthesis • Ex. Animals use carbon dioxide to produce carbon to build their hard skeletons
