  2. DO NOW • 1. Where is the asteroid belt located? • 2. What is a comet made of? • 3. Which planet is the fifth from the sun?

  3. GOAL • To be able to explain the universe in terms of stars, planets and moons relative to our solar system

  4. Star Size (biggest to smallest) 1. Super Giants (biggest) 2. Giants 3. Medium Sized STARS

  5. Star Size 4. White Dwarfs 5. Neutrons (Smallest) STARS

  6. What are stars made of? Spectroscope measures light from stars Different bands for different elements Ex: Table salt burns yellow due to presence of sodium STARS

  7. What are stars made of? Most are made of 60-80% Hydrogen 20-40% Helium 1-10 % Oxygen, Neon, Carbon or Nitrogen STARS

  8. Star Temperature (coolest to hottest) Related to color RedCoolest Red-Orange Yellow White BlueHottest STARS

  9. Star Brightness Depends on size, temp and distance from earth STARS

  10. Why do stars shine? Nuclear Fusion Gravity inside Pulls H atoms in tightly Causes them to fuse/stick Gives off heat and light STARS

  11. SUN Made of extremely hot gases SUN

  12. Corona Outside layer of the sun- hazy red halo SUN’S LAYERS

  13. Chromosphere 2nd Layer of sun where gases flare up and spew into space SUN’S LAYERS

  14. Photosphere 3rd layer of sun- actual surface SUN’S LAYERS

  15. Core Hot, inside part of the sun SUN’S LAYERS

  16. Sun’s Layers

  17. Prominences Violent gas loops on sun Spews energy & gas into space SUN’S ACTIVITIES

  18. Solar Flares Bright light bursts on sun Release tons of energy & heat SUN’S ACTIVITIES

  19. Solar Winds High energy particles, Streaming into space Interferes with radios and phones SUN’S ACTIVITIES

  20. Sun Spots Dark, cooler areas Interferes with communication technology SUN’S ACTIVITIES

  21. What does the sun do for us? • Make a list of atleast 3 things that the sun does for us or provides for us. (Hint: What would happen if the sun died out?)

  22. Why is the sun so important? 1. Warm temps needed for life SUN

  23. Why is the sun so important? 2. Holds earth in orbit SUN

  24. Why is the sun so important? 3. Lights up moon SUN

  25. Why is the sun so important? 4. Causes water cycle SUN

  26. Why is the sun so important? 5. Creates weather SUN

  27. Why is the sun so important? 6. Allows plant growth Food Oxygen Coal, Oil, Gas SUN

  28. Assessment • Write the following assignment into your agenda: • Star Lab
