  1. ORiNOCO RG-based LANs Hands-on

  2. Hands-on tasksOverview • Installing the RG • Configuration of RG • Installing different network configurations • Uploading new FW • Forced reload

  3. Objectives • Feel familiar with the RG: • Configuration settings • Create RG network(s) • Verify networking using Microsoft Networking (browse network neighborhood) • Access shared disks on other systems in the network • Operate in teams and synchronize with other teams • Number of persons per team depends on amount of RG hardware available

  4. Make sure to have available… • Hardware kit (PC Card or ISA kit) • Platform (Notebook computer, desktop computer) • Windows installation CD-ROM (or equivalent stored on hard disk) • RG systems • ORiNOCO RG Setup Utility (from instructor’s Hard-disk, floppy or CD-ROM) • ORiNOCO AP Manager (from instructor’s Hard-disk, floppy or CD-ROM)

  5. Using a Hub Using a cross over cable Using wireless Connection to the RGvia wired or wireless Configuration and the RG devices can be done by running ORiNOCO RG setup utility on a station connected wireless or wired to the RG, or using the ORiNOCO AP manager The configuration station needs to be in the same sub-net as the RG

  6. Using a Hub Using a cross over cable Using wireless Task 1Access the RG 1a) Assure ORiNOCO PC Card to be present and operational in notebook or Assure Ethernet Card to be present and operational in notebook 1b) Add TCP/IP protocol to Notebook or PC (if needed) 1c) Install ORiNOCO RG-1000 Setup utility on Notebook or PC

  7. Using a Hub Using a cross over cable Using wireless Task 2Changing the RG configuration 2a) Connect notebook to RG (wired via hub or cross cable) or wireless via ORiNOCO PC Card 2b) Load configuration from your assigned RG 2c) Review RG-1000 settings 2d) Make changes to configuration parameters: • Frequency channel

  8. Task 3Associate with the RG 3a) Have wireless station (notebook with ORiNOCO PC card) associate with the RG 3b) Run ORiNOCO Client Manager, 3c) Observe communications quality to the RG 3d) Observe data rate and assess impact on data-rate when moving away from RG 3e) Observe history chart and noise level

  9. Task 4Use RG as relay 4a) Have a second wireless station (notebook with ORiNOCO PC card) associate with the RG 4b) Perform station-station communication via the RG 4c) Perform a file transfer from one station to the other and observe the transfer time 4d) Determine the transfer rate (in Mbps)

  10. Task 5Use RG as relay 5a) Have a second wired station (notebook with Ethernet card connect to the RG (e.g. cross over cable) 5b) Perform station-station communication via the RG 5c) Perform a file transfer from one station to the other and observe the transfer time 5d) Determine the transfer rate (in Mbps)

  11. Task 6Connect to Internet using modem (RG-1000) 6a) Load configuration from the RG-1000 6c) Make changes to Internet settings (to be provided by instructor): • Select Modem • Enter telephone number • Enter login name • Enter password 6d) Change (if needed) the Proxy setting on Internet browser to “no Proxy” 6e) Browse Internet

  12. Task 7Network with more RGs 7a) Assure only one DHCP server to be operational 7b) Assure to use different IP addresses 7c) Establish station to station communication (file sharing)

  13. Go do it, Play …. …. Enjoy
