What is my child doing in Language Arts? • There are 3 ways to check what we are working on in class: • Our class website • Q • Your child’s Language Arts notebook.
Class website • Go to Centennial’s Website • Click Teacher pages • Click class homepage or 2013/2014 Language Arts 3 Assignments • I updated it weekly.
Check Your Child’s Grades… Q I print out overall grades and post them at the end of each week for students to see. Please check Q a few times a week.
Language Arts Notebook / Journals • Must bring Language Arts Notebook Everyday! • Language Arts notebook for agenda, journal entries, and lecture notes. • They must complete the notes, agenda, and journal entry if returning from an absence. • These are checked at the end of each quarter! (100pts)
Outside Reading 300 pages / quarter This quarter, students must complete a reading log each week. They should aim for 120 minutes/week. They are exempt from 120 minutes a week once they pass their book talk of 300 pages. Book talks each quarter See Book Talk Frequently Asked Questions handout
When is my child’s book talk? • See what your son or daughter signed up to read. List is on the cabinet. • See the book talk interview date. • Students may not make up a missed interview. The only exception is an excused absence. Students may always conduct a book talk earlier then the sign up date. See schedule posted on the cabinet.
Weekly Homework • Due each Monday- Reading logs • Due each Wed – Root, prefix, suffix flash cards • Occasionally –grammar pages
Common Core • This year’s instruction and learning will look different this year as we transition to the new Common Core Standards. • Students should be prepared for more writing, non-fiction expository texts, critical thinking, and 21st century skills.
EAPEarly Assessment Program • Language Arts Essay in March • Multiple choice in April (STAR testing) • Scores of Ready / Conditional Ready / Not yet ready • Students who are conditional ready must earn a C or better in 12th grade ERWC course to place into Freshman English.
2012/2013 EAP results for LA • Total EAP tests= 665 • Ready for LA in College = 215, 32% • Conditional Ready = 129, 19% • Not Ready = 321, 48%
