  4. What is an ILP? • Independent research or learning project • Research some aspect of health or medicine • 24 weeks of full time work • Work with a supervisor (team?) • Outputs = lit review + final report • Aim is to get you thinking “scientifically”

How does Honours differ from ILP? • Independent research or learning project • Research some aspect of health or medicine • Work with a supervisor (team?) • Aim is to get you thinking “scientifically” • 32 weeks of full time work • Outputs = lit review + seminars + manuscript • Normally a preparation for higher research degree • More challenging projects

  6. Honours BSc (Med) Hons • Only as year 4 student • need a WAM of over 70 • numbers capped ( 30 but may change)

  7. Independent Learning Project How long is the ILP? • total of 28UoC • Equivalent to 24 weeks of full time study spread over 32 weeks • ILP is taken concurrently with Extra faculty course

  8. ILP : Assessment How is the ILP assessed? • ILP 1 - Lit Review/Progress report • ILP 2 - Supervisor’s report (satisfactory/unsatisfactory) • ILP 3- Final Report (5000 words) • External examiner - 60% • Supervisor’s report - 40%

  9. Honours BSc (Med) Hons • Assessment • 3000 word Literature Review (10 %) • Introductory Seminar (5%) • Final Seminar (15 %) • 7000 word manuscript (50 %) • Student performance (supervisor) (20 %)

  11. Independent Learning Project Are there exemptions from the ILP? • Having completed a Honours or higher degree by research (not by course work). • Other ? Case by case

Significant Dates • April 16: ILP and Hons information session • April 16: “Negotiation” phase commences • June 18: Last date to submit negotiated ILP proposal on eMed • (may be “incomplete” at this stage) • June 25: invitation for staff to submit “allocated” ILP proposals • August 24: Last date for ILP students/supervisors to finalise “negotiated” projects, and for staff to submit “allocated” projects. Hons applications due • September 10: “allocated” projects will be listed on eMed for students to browse and select • September 17: ILP preference form listed on the web site • October 8: Due date for ILP preference form • October 22: First round of ILP allocation outcome will be sent to students/supervisors • March 4 2013 - Induction Day 1 / ILP/Hons

  13. ILP & Honours How do you find a project? • Students can negotiate a project with a supervisor • ILP : submit by June 18 / finalise by Aug 24 • Honours : Submit by Aug 24 • ILP projects may be selected from website. If over subscribed, student allocated to ILP by ballot (Sep-Oct).

  15. Think • Long term career plans? • Have you found some fields more interesting than others ? • Have you found any staff members more interesting / inspiring ??? • Are you more interested in clinical or lab based ?

Read / Research • research areas of interest using “research interest” or staff profiles on faculty of medicine web site • read through previous projects listed on ILP web site (“current projects) • talk to previous students • talk to staff members / facilitators • arrange meeting with me (room 507 WWB, 9385 1580

  17. Short list & contact • make a short-list • arrange meeting • do your research before you meet ! -– know what the potential supervisor does - have an idea in mind • listen

  19. Independent Learning Project • Make a plan in collaboration with your intended supervisor • Adapt this plan for the ILP submission form • Submit by June 18 • Finalise by Aug 24
