  1. HYBRID VS. HOMEWORK Creating Powerful Hybrid Assignments Presenters: Jeannie Antes Toni Johnson

  2. Agenda • Ice Breaker • Defining Hybrid & Homework • Differences between Hybrid & Homework • Best Practices • Creating Powerful Hybrid Assignments • Creating Effective Discussion Questions

  3. Icebreaker Introduce yourself (name, profession, course) What are the characteristics of a good hybrid assignment?

  4. Homework & Hybrid Assignments Practice past lessons & reinforce information learned during class Prepare for future lessons Require critical feedback to be beneficial Inspires & triggers independent learning Improve students’ skills and abilities

  5. How is a hybrid assignment different? Should engage students for the entire hybrid hour requirement (i.e. 1 hour, 2 hour) Should be an extension of learning from the current class period Should be as interactive as possible Should be “student led” / independent study Should be varied in nature to attain student interest Should invoke critical thinking skills

  6. Hybrid Assignment Examples • Example 1: • Watch a film or film clip • Write an essay about a specific aspect of the film’s subject • Research a specific aspect of the film and document their findings • Example 2: • Review a Power Point or “Breeze” presentation • Complete an assignment/task to demonstrate skills learned • Example 3: • Using the textbook website, assign specific interactive activities • Example 4: • Access professional journals in CECybrary as springboards to independent research assignments

  7. Open Discussion • Give 1 example of a hybrid assignment that you COULD give based on the previous examples • Brief description • Expected outcome • Open sharing / discussion

  8. What makes a good discussion question? Uses open-ended questions that prompt a variety of answers depending on perspective or experience. Challenges critical thinking skills and promotes research outside the assigned reading. Requires application and integration of information learned in class and from multiple sources.

  9. Ineffective Discussion Question Answer the questions at the end of chapter 3 on page 125. Post your answers in the forum provided. Complete this assignment by Wednesday, April 14.

  10. Effective Discussion Question During the class period, we learned about the importance of culture and socialization on any organization. (Reference: Chapter 6 of the text). Describe the culture of the CTU organization. Be sure to include one positive and one negative attribute. Do students & faculty value the culture of CTU? Be able to substantiate your opinions. Post your initial response within 24 hours of the close of class. Respond to a minimum of 2 peers by 11:59 p.m. on the due date.

  11. What type of assignment is this? In class this week we discussed Campbell’s definition of the hero’s journey. Watch the film in the link below. It provides a full background of  the Greek hero, Jason: Watch the film titled Jason: Every Greek Boy's Hero located at the bottom of this assignment screen. Pay attention to Jason's feats, challenges, and motivations. Research a contemporary fictional hero such as Batman or James Bond. In your discussion, summarize the hero’s feats and attributes. Compare this hero to the typical Greek hero, Jason. Read other students’ posts. In a new post, describe your own concept of what a hero is. Why have our definitions of heroes changed since the heroes of Greek myth?

  12. Hybrid Best Practices Should be weighted in point value according to the hybrid percentage (Example: 25% hybrid course should have hybrid assignments worth 25% of the student’s total grade.) A rubric should accompany each hybrid assignment with point breakdown Should incorporate all learning styles throughout the term Consider using terms or concepts which cannot be answered without having read assigned material.

  13. Hybrid Best Practices (cont’d) • For discussion questions: • Clearly set expectations for behavior in the discussion room. (i.e. Set norms, boundaries for interpersonal behavior) • At the beginning of the term, use a discussion question that allows students to identify themselves and share informally. This helps to “build community” within the discussion room.

  14. CTU Library: Your “one stop” shop for hybrid assignments • URL: http://coloradotech.libguides.com/faculty • Ideas for and samples of library assignments • Guide to creating a research or library assignment • Research tutorials for students • Business, CJ, and health journals • Librarian feedback and suggestions for research projects • Databases with articles from publications (newspapers, & professional journals) • For additional information, see Olga Koz.
