Starter 1 Recap- key words: Equality, Stereotype, Diversity Discrimination 2 Sally does the same job as Luke, they started at the same time, have the same qualifications and their work is of equal value yet Luke gets paid £750 more per year than Sally. Is this fair? How do you think Sally feels? 3 Which employment law does this contravene eg go against?

  3. Political Factors: Changes to the Law 1945 – The Welfare State was set up including the NHS in 1948 to get rid of the 5 evils of society: Want/ Disease/ Ignorance/ Squalor & Idleness. The NHS offers all people equal access and treatment to health services. 1970 –The Equal Pay Act was introduced to stop discriminating between men and woman in pay and working conditions 1975- The Sex Discrimination Act was introduced to stop discrimination within areas of employment eg anyone should be able to apply for a job regardless of sex or receive the same opportunities 1976 – The Race Relations Act To stop discrimination within employment and opportunities to housing & services linked ethnicity/ race/ culture/ religion. 1995 (2005) – The Disability Discrimination Act - To prevent discrimination in employment opportunities and access to housing, transport & services.

Make a poster in the form of a mind map to show your findings. (To complete) • Task 1B (P1) • Research and collate information about different political factors that contribute to a diverse and equal society. Explain why each piece of legislation or act has helped individuals who may have been discriminated against. (To complete) • Task 1C (P1) • Research and collate information about different biological factors that contribute to a diverse and equal society. Find a newspaper or news article that demonstrates how biological factors can influence the equality of an individual

Read Colin’s case and discuss the questions in pairs. • What constitutes discriminatory practice? • Labelling • Stereotyping • Prejudice • Discrimination • Turn to P 34 of your book Task: Make a list with your partner of the effects of discrimination on the indivivual?

  8. Biological factors • What do we mean by biological factors that make us diverse? • We are going to read the Activity on P 36 then discuss - They are not ‘normal’..... Task 1C: Research and collate information about different biological factors that contribute to a diverse and equal society. Homework - Find a newspaper or news article that demonstrates how biological factors can influence the equality of an individual

(5/6 =Pass 7/8 =Merit 9/10= Distinction)
