STAMPS Scinde Dawk The Dawk or Dak was a very old system of runners that served the Indus Valley of Sindh, (Now in Pakistan). The term Scinde Dawk refers to the irst adhesive postage stamps in Asia. The name derives from the words “Scinde”, the British spelling of the name of the province of “Sindh”, and “Dawk”, the anglicised spelling of the Hindustani word “Dak” or Post. In 1852, India became the 10th country in the world and irst in asia to issue postage stamps in a remote province called scinde. Sir. Bartle Frere designed the stamps . The Scinde Dawk Stamps were issued for the irst time on 01-07-1852 and subsequently stopped on 30-09-1854 and the balance was ordained to be destroyed. White & Red were locally done, whereas blue was printed by De La Rue. Red was the result to replace white as it was not visible in B postal system of Sindh by introducing a cheap and uniform rate for postage, independent of distance travelled. In 1851 the runners were replaced with an eicient system using horses and camels, following routes through Scinde province, generally along the valley of the Indus river. The mail was carried quickly and eiciently, connecting government oices and post oices from Karachi through Kotri and Hyderabad up to Sukkur. artle Frere of the East India Company became the Chief Commissioner of Sindh in 1850. Following the English example set by Rowland Hill, Frere improved upon the candle light. Stamps are printed in diferent processes. Paper stamps have been produced in a variety of techniques such as letterpress, photogravure, ofset lithography printing, engraving & intaglio. Portuguese founded the town of Chuchura (Hooghly) in 1579, but the district has thousands of years of heritage in the form of the great kingdom of Bhurshut. The city lourished as a trading port and some religious structures were built. One such structure is a Christian church dedicated to a statue of Mary, brought by the Portuguese. In the 17th century, political disorder struck the city and the Mughal governor of Bengal expelled the Portuguese. The leeing Portuguese lost the statue in the river, but local people later found it on the river bank. The arrested Portuguese were taken to Delhi, where a death sentence of trampling by elephants was decreed. When the emperor Shah Jahan heard this he ordered the priests released and granted a piece of land on the bank of the river Hooghly, where the statue of Mary was re-established. There the Portuguese constructed a church to house the statue, which still receives pilgrims today. In 1656 the Dutch erected a factory on the site of the town. At that time Calcutta was the principal settlement in Dutch Bengal, who used it as a base for the Dutch intra-Asian opium trade. In 1759 the garrison of Chinsura, on its march to Chandernagore, attacked a British force under Colonel Forde. The Battle of Chinsurah lasted less than half an hour and ended with the rout of the Dutch attackers. In 1795, during the Napoleonic wars, a British garrison occupied the settlement. The peace of 1814 restored Hughli to the Dutch. However, in 1825, the Dutch ceded many of their possession in India to the British, in exchange for the British possessions in Sumatra. 41. Coins Of Ancient India The famous Horse Sacriice type Ashwamedha Parakramah and Haymedha Parakramah of Chakravati Raja Samudragupta Ashwamedha or Haymedha was one of the grandest of the Vedic religious rites of ancient India, performed by a king to celebrate or to be more precise is to prove their imperial sovereignty. The ceremony is described in detail in various Vedic writings, particularly the Shatapath Brahmana. A special ine stallion was selected and was allowed to roam freely for a year under the protection of a royal guard. If the horse entered a foreign country, its ruler had either to ight or to submit. If the horse was not captured during the year, it was victo- riously brought back to the capital accompanied by the rulers of the lands it entered, and then sacriiced at a great public ceremony, which was accompanied by much feasting and celebration. The wandering horse was said to symbolize the Sun in its journey over the world and, consequently, the power of the king over the whole Earth. On successfully carrying out a horse sacriice, the king could assume the title of chakra- varti (universal monarch). The rite served not only to glorify the king but also to ensure the prosperity and fertility of the entire kingdom. Ashwamedha Parakramah Type 161 161. Very interesting specimen than of all the other types from the series, the throat, neck, shoulder and chest of the horse is broader than of normal specimens. Coin has the stylised version of the horse where the front of the body is much broader and the back of the horse is seen more inclined. The yupa is also stylized from the bottom with ribbons on the middle part of it, the extended part from the top of yupa is in the standard form without the dotted motifs or loral designs. The major point to note is the usage of a diferent variant of the word Haya which in Sanskrit or Hindi is the synonym of Ashwa alias Ghotak, Raviputra, Turang, Saindhav, Dadhika, Sarta etc.It could be noted from this specimen that at the time of issuing the Ashwamedha coins to commemorate and to celebrate the Vedic ritual, the orders were issued to celebrate this event in grandeur in the whole Gupta Kingdom and simultane- ously the royal court would have selected some prominent and major coin mints to strike the Horse Sacriice coins. And one of them would have minted this typical diferent type than the usual Ashwamedha types where they have used the Sanskrit word “HAYA” instead of “ASHWA” and struck Haymedha Parakramah. This specimen is as similar as the Battle-Axe type where the word “Kr” was used instead of “Samudra” in obverse. And similarly of Tiger-Slayer type where the word “Vyaghra-Nihanta” is used instead of “Raja Samudragupta” on the reverse. Highly signiicant coin from the Gupta Dynasty as “Haya” is readable instead of “Ashwa” on this. Only 2-3 specimens are known including this one. Usually what we see is the reverse looking king with his hand going up and holding the bow from the top but this specimen has the hand coming to the down holding the bow from the center. The bow is seen resting on the shoulders of the king. And if the reverse is observed than the lotus stem will be seen going from inside the lower part of hand to the top. This type of the king’s position makes this specimen amazing. Lovely artistic features overall on this beautiful specimen.
