  1. Emotional Communication in the workplace Com 3068 - Medved

  2. Rational/logical and emotional • What assumptions do you make about how people act and/or interact in the workplace? • Do you assume that workers behave logically and/or rationally in the workplace? • What does logical or rational mean to you? • Applying Reason, sound judgment, predictable, well-reasoned, sensible, sane, intelligent. • How do you think emotion is a part of work-life?

  3. Different ways emotion is a part of organizational interactions • Emotion as a part of the job: Emotional labor must be displayed as a part of doing the job well. • Emotion as a part of work relationships: Emotion felt as a part of everyday relationships. • Emotional rules in operation: tacit rules governing workplace interactions.

  4. Emotional labor • Emotion that must be displayed as a job requirement: customer service, human service, 911 operators, bill collectors, military, etc. • What do you think are some of the challenges? And/or benefits? • The closer the monitoring, the more stressful. • The degree of difference between ‘felt’ emotion and performance, the more stressful and can lead to burnout.

  5. Emotional labor (con’t) • Surface or deep acting in performing these emotions. • Emotional labor is usually considered ‘inauthentic’ in that you are performing for the organization's benefit. • And, emotional work also exists when not explicitly spelled out.

  6. Emotion as a part of work relationships • How else have we talked about emotional communication at work? • Ways emotion at work arises: • Public/Private Conflicts = workplace emotion • Relational networks and emotional ‘buzzing’ • Conflicting allegiances • Emotional rights and obligationis • Emotion from family relationships and conflicts also effect workplace emotions.

  7. Emotional rules • What are some of the unspoken rules about ‘professional’ displays of emotion? • ‘express emotions in a professional way’ • ‘express emotions to improve situations’ • ‘express emotions to the right people’ • ‘express emotions to help people’ • ‘do not manage emotions for personal benefit to the detriment of others’ • ‘the expression of certain emotions is always inappropriate’ • The ability to identify, assess, and control emotions of oneself and others = emotional intelligence (Goldman, 1998). Fans and critiques as EI.

  8. Thursday • Start class by 11:00am or 2:20: Up in the Air • Give you a set of questions to think about as you watch the movie. • Extra Credit Blog will be about the movie. • Focus on identifying and critiquing emotional labor, emotion at work, and emotion rules illustrated in the movie.
